I loved my doctoral years. Had health insurance for first time on my own. Lived in a beautiful historic city. Got to learn cool things alongside some of the best people (friends now almost 15 years!?). When the spot is right for you it’s bangers.

@wickettred I had a similar experience. Lots of self doubt and hard work too, but after waiting tables for years for crappy pay, getting money and insurance to teach and study felt like a dream. And I met some of the most important people in my life.

I will also say I think part of the joy was it didn’t seem like I was poor, bc I hadn’t had much economically before, and felt lucky just to do it even if I didn’t get a job. To me, grad school beat rust belt wages or dirt road towns any day.
