Actually, he called war unjust and against God. Any war. All wars. Even if you are attacked, or are about to be attacked. Even the war we declared on Japan after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Everything should and can be decided upon by negotiation, in the view of Pope Leo XIV. Do you agree?

The Pope just threw the BIBLE at Trump, calling the war in Iran UNJUST. He tells Americans to call congress and demand Trump be impeached.

If Ro Khanna has his way, the next Democratic President will preside over the destruction of Israel and the extermination of its people, and a nuclear attack on the United States by an Iranian missile. He has offered zero alternative to the present Administration. Zero.

Temporary ceasefire or not, Trump already committed an impeachable offense. Congress needs to get back to work and remove him from office before he does more damage to our country and the world.

Trump, an architect of peace in 8 wars, has been defamed and attacked for rhetoric for years. He ended the dictatorship in Venezuela without a single American death, and by even limited deaths among the Dictator's bodyguards. He has taken pains to avoid civilian casualties in the present conflict. Any comparison with Nazi leaders is perhaps we**d.

The names of Trump, Vance, Hegseth, Rubio and Miller will live in perpetual infamy alongside those of the Nazi ringleaders of the Third Reich: Hitler, Goering, Himmler, Von Ribbentrop and Goebbels. The judgment of history will be merciless.

@joekent16jan19 The frequent anti-Israel ra*ts of Mr Kent are becoming more and more a concern to those who rushed to his defense. He has come too close to calling for the destruction of Israel, and one wonders where he will stop.

The fact that you're a professor of European history & think modern America is even remotely akin to Nazi Germany is exactly the problem with the history profession today. There's a reason that history programs are hemorrhaging students. It's you.
Marci Shore@marci_shore

I've taught European history for 30 years. Americans have always asked me how the Holocaust was possible, how Germans could have enabled a madman reveling in mass murder to carry out his plans. Now we can see in real time how this is enabled; now we have front-row seats.

I remember German Chancellor Kohl saying that he had assembled reporters at the Rhine River, and walked across the water. The newspapers reported the next day "Kohl cannot swim." Trump did not cede control of the Strait - he demanded that the Iranians cease blocking it. They seem to have agreed.

It appears Trump just agreed to give Iran control of the Strait of Hormuz, a history-changing win for Iran. The level of incompetence is both stunning and heartbreaking. What on earth is happening?

Trump has never threatened war crimes. He has threatened to bomb bridges. This is not a war crime. He has threatened to bomb power plants. This is not a war crime. He has bombed military installations. This is not a war crime. It is important for a member of Congress to avoid hyperbole.

Trump often uses strong language to get results, rather than strong action. In this case, he just did. They agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz for 2 weeks. However, we do not yet know if they met the conditions. It is still too early. It is important in wartime for Americans to unite to win the war, and for Senators to restrain themselves from misunderstanding the President.

In an age of creeping relativism, a universal moral law still exists. Threatening to end an entire civilization of 90 million people in order to bend a nation’s conduct to your will is grossly morally wrong. It is evil. And we should say this loudly.

@eurofounder Yes, that is what Neville Chamberlain did at Munich in 1938. Nice words to get nice agreements that were meaningless. Religious fanatics do not change their behavior by nice words from people who do not understand their goals.

It would be better if Democrats would have a better idea about economics, affordability, migration, crime, and education, and stopped their incessant cries for socialism, which has never worked anywhere, and for prosecution of their political opponents. But, that is wishing for the moon.

Well, this is the extent of what is hurled against our logic by opponents of the only Jewish state in the world, where Christians and Muslims are citizens, vote, and participate in a real democracy, the only one in the region. All of Israel's wars have been in self-defense. Iran, of course, threatens us, the US, because our culture is not acceptable to their religious beliefs. We must be destroyed.

@EVKontorovich Just because someone says that something is against international law doesn't mean that it is. All warfare involves bridges and power stations and such infrastructure. ALL warfare, and always has.

The notion that international law prohibits attacking bridges or power stations in war is ludicrous, and the U.S. and its allies did so extensively in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War and even the 1999 air campaign against Yugoslavia, which left most of Serbia without electricity.
Clash Report@clashreport

The UK will refuse U.S. requests to use British bases for strikes on Iranian bridges or power plants. UK officials argue these targets are civilian infrastructure and could make such attacks a potential war crime, so permission will not be granted. Source: The i Paper

Once you get past the blustering of Trump's statements, mostly designed to frighten the regime, you arrive at the real reason for the war. Iran has been attacking us for decades, our bases and installations within reach. It is developing a nuclear weapon, and N Korea will help it get ICBMs to hit Chicago. Unlike N Korea, it WILL hit Chicago, because that is how these religious fanatics think. And, they already have a missile that can reach our bases in Europe. We needed to stop this as soon as we learned that they had enough enriched uranium to make 10-11 nuclear warheads. Even in an election year.

Yes, that is so. Europe is divided, however. It has domestic issues that prevent them from aligning with us on defense matters. Eastern and Western Europe disagree. And, they have never thought that they might be called upon to provide military action. They relied upon us. We are not powerful enough to defend alone anymore. But, they are not ready to join us. They can't even afford to deploy their puny navies.

Pulling out of NATO would be a disaster for decades to come. Our alliances have already been damaged, and trust with our closest partners has been weakened. We need our allies to deter Russia, China, and Iran, and to address threats worldwide. America alone is a weaker America.

@mehdirhasan Sorry, war is dirty. When you prepare to attack the US, you must expect that we might do a preventive attack, rather than sit back and wait. In World War II, infrastructure was attacked. It happens in all wars. So, it is a good idea not to attack.

Just a reminder that America would never tolerate such attacks on our own civilian infrastructure and would rightly refer to such illegal attacks as terrorism. We are behaving like a rogue state, and elected Republicans are proud of it.
Aaron Rupar@atrupar

CNN: Do you support targeting critical civilian infrastructure like power plants? REP. KUSTOFF: Could that infrastructure have a dual use? Could it be used by the military? If the answer is yes, which I think they are, then they're within the purview of US attacks

Well, Captain Kelly, what would you suggest that the US military do to win this war? Iran has enough enriched uranium to build 10-11 nuclear weapons, and is 6 months away from building an ICBM with help from N. Korea. Unlike N. Korea, they would attack us. So, instead of saying "no, this is wrong," tell us what YOU would do.

Threatening to target power plants and other non-military targets is not strength. If those words become orders to destroy civilian infrastructure with no valid military purpose, it’s hard to see how they would not violate the laws of armed conflict. America leads best with strength, discipline, and professionalism. Illegal orders to make civilians suffer would be a black mark on our military and our country.

The American people have had enough of prosecution of political enemies. What we want is good government, at low cost, affordable living conditions, no illegal migration, no crime, and good schools. If Democrats promise persecution of political enemies and high taxes to give free stuff, that's not what most of us would like.
