@BrambleBotanist @Norwichbirder @Jo_the_botanist @EDP24 DNA was taken from my tree's parent & it's clone 25 - the most widespread & common clone in #Norfolk. Ben suggested planting more of it is not worthwhile, instead increase the genetic diversity in Norfolk by planting rarer clones & use females from outside the county.

@A_CountryLife @Norwichbirder @Jo_the_botanist @EDP24 The clone numbering system was based on morphology, tho detailed I think this recent DNA work has to supersede that. I understand one male clone is mainly west Norfolk and another mainly east, another rare and one female.. presumably 25 is either the W or E male clone

@Norwichbirder @Jo_the_botanist EDP getting very confused here! Otter Trust have been doing great work DNAing eastern Native Black Poplar: just 2 or 3 male genotypes found & 1 female. These genotypes are widely planted (as conditions for germination no longer exist) historically and recently across Norfolk.
