The EFL has certainly dispelled any thoughts that any club would have on spying on opposition in future.

So Southampton have been kicked out of the playoff final - they can blame no one else but themselves, as it appears this ‘spying’ on their opponents hasn’t been a one off (from allegations in the statement) - certainly learned the hard way.

@HACKETTREF Surely he interpreted the laws as decreed by IFAB as it was set out. It was an accidental handball, at no point did he move his hand/arm toward the ball. It’s like subjective offsides. Make all handballs deliberate or not a penalising offence. No grey areas

@refsupportuk @ManUtd Agreed. The handball laws are a total mishmash from IFAB, it’s like the subjective offsides, different officials will interpret differently. These ambiguities just leave like a festering wound.

On the @ManUtd hand ball, any criticism needs to be aimed at IFAB who can’t help themselves meddling with the laws that refs have to take abuse for the correct interpretation of said laws. 🤷‍♂️

@grassrootsrefJa @Afc_El_ @shirdzz That’s the problem, you say it wasn’t good for the game, but are the ambiguities that we have now good for the game? It’s like subjective offsides - the inconsistencies of interpretation. Personally I feel that VAR a has been to the detriment of on field officiating

sorry but do they genuinely change the rule from week to week because as long as i’ve been watching football i’ve been told an attacking handball is penalised REGARDLESS of intent

@jonmikesav8 The best way to remove any doubt is rewrite the law and make any contact with the arm/hand a handball. By the letter of the law as it’s currently written - ludicrous as it may seem, the onfield referee was ‘correct’

Come on when we saw the replay none of us thought that goal would stand. Even the players didn’t but at least we are surprised and happy it was given. Gary Neville is going to top himself.

@HughWoozencroft You can’t blame VAR and you cannot blame the onfield referee either. By the letter of the law (as it’s written) his decision isn’t ‘wrong’ - the issue is the law needs rewritten by IFAB to remove any ambiguity. How about any contact with hand or arm is handball - NO exceptions

Can't blame VAR there... 100% an error by the on-field referee. I can see why he thought it may have been accidentally (touches thigh first) but Mbeumo clearly pins the ball with his arm - that's deliberate handball. Another one for Webb to apologise for 😆 #MUNNFO

@BBCMOTD Just because he thinks it’s ‘footballs expectation’ whatever he’s trying to imply with that - the fact is that the laws of the game (whether you agree or not) were applied - I’ve said it before that the law for handball is a mishmash. Change the law and remove any ambiguity

By the wording of the law the onfield referee came to the correct conclusion. I don’t blame him or VAR for their interpretations - it’s time for IFAB to remove any ambiguity surrounding hand ball - if the ball comes off the hand or arm no matter the circumstances - it’s handball

@davidlynchlfc You can argue the rights or wrongs of the handball law, but the incident today by the letter of the law was correct. Not the referees fault, not VAR’s fault - blame those who made the law at IFAB - in my opinion, handball should be handball, deliberate or not - no grey areas

The handball law is now so convoluted that a referee has talked himself into giving a goal in the immediate aftermath of someone basically catching the ball in the box. Football has lost the plot.

@BBCMOTD @BBCSport Going by the laws of the game, if the ball comes off another part of his body (this instance his thigh) onto the arm its not deemed handball - so technically the onfield referee is correct.

@ODonnellDale The problem is Neville is so adamant, I think the laws state if it deflects off another part of the body onto the arm it’s not handball.
