I have covered many con artists, and they often behave the same way. They make bold declarations, tap into nationalistic and even animalistic instincts, and promise the moon. They alone can change things, they claim, no one else can. Their followers buy into the scam and attack anyone who tries to show them the truth. The scammer often lives off taxpayers or bank loans. They never ever spend their money. They give speeches — meaningless words here and there — with constant claims of greatness and wealth. In reality, though, it’s all fake. They may tell you how great a Christian they are, yet never go to church, or boast about how much money they’ve made when, in reality, it’s all smoke and mirrors: hundreds of millions of dollars in debt, loans, bankruptcies, fake paper assets — and little to no real cash. People believe in the myth and mistake it for reality. But it’s all fake. It doesn’t matter how old they are — it’s human nature. If someone says something with enough confidence, loud enough, and repeats it often, people start to believe it. We don’t want to see the pattern, but the pattern is the only thing that matters — not the mask, not the distractions, not the cloud of dust people use to hide their actions. Often, the followers begin to act like the scammer now seen as their leader. If they are cruel, the followers become cruel. If they are hateful, the followers become hateful. They attack, insult, demean, but never ever help anyone they benefit from or read. There’s no space for love, no space for kindness anymore, no space to build people up — just tear them down. When they hear that you’re being blocked from White House press conferences for your work, they celebrate. It gives them joy. They have become as hateful and as heartless as can be. The messiah is just one person who can do no wrong. You might think they are okay because you’re fair and balanced, but in reality there’s no more love in them for anyone else.
