@Kulambq Crane later slashed this painting with a knife during a depressive episode.

This portrait of Hart Crane was painted by David Siqueiros, whom Crane considered his favourite contemporary Mexican painter. The painting was made in 1931 and Crane considered it 'astounding.' It's pretty haunting.

@AmericanGwyn A key part of what Wordsworth actually said gets left out: "Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility.” This sounds more like an argument for the detachment from raw unprocessed emotion that craft affords.

Once of the negative consequences of English Romantic poetry is that Wordsworthian ideas about creativity infected writers and readers for centuries: the fantasy of WW’s “spontaneous overflow of emotion” eclipsed the reality of hard-won, laborious craftsmanship.

@AmericanGwyn It's "bizarre" for a writer to admit making things up in a work of fiction?

There’s a solid book by Terry Mott about Hemingway’s WWII adventures. There’s also an interesting book by Nicholas Reynolds about his adventures as a Soviet spy.

@AmericanGwyn That passage would be so much better how I first read it, "lol" instead of "lo."

I’m not saying it’s about to go down, but: “And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood.”

@mualphaxi @X Maybe...but "reinvigorating" American culture at some point has to mean creating and embracing NEW things altogether and not just rebooting/repurposing already established, copyrighted stuff. More Mickey Mouse and Sherlock Holmes wouldn't exactly feel like a cultural renaissance.

I'm testing out the new @X Articles feature with something I wrote last year but never published. My short proposal to reinvigorate American culture by limiting copyright terms to 50 years. What do you think? twitter.com/mualphaxi/stat…

@MsMelChen A similar but easier-to-defend approach would be tuition based on the cost to educate someone (i.e., the facilities/resources to educate an English major tend to cost less than those to educate a physician or engineer).

The student loan debate has brought up this idea that tuition should be based on future salary. Perhaps I'm naive but I still valorize the pursuit of knowledge that ostensibly has no practical value. Humanity's future depends on long-term thinking unguarded by market pressures.
