Immediately violated. 1975: War ends not through negotiation but because the Vietnamese military simply drove to Saigon and took it. Conclusion: Every time Vietnam trusted American paper, Americans used the pause to regroup, rearm, or reposition. The only thing that ended the war was making it impossible to continue. Not signatures. Not summits. Not Nobel Prizes. Impossibility. That is the lesson. Not just for Vietnam. Every war, every deployment, every military action, regardless of its legal status or its human consequences, the soldiers are heroes. This is not a description. It is a policy. Because if the soldiers are not automatically heroes, then the people who sent them somewhere illegal are criminals who used heroes as instruments of crime. And the people who supported the war are citizens who cheered for crime. And the yellow ribbon magnets on the cars are not support but complicity. The automatic heroism of the soldier forecloses all of those questions. It doesn't dishonor the soldiers. Many of them joined because they had no other economic options. Many of them believed genuinely in what they were told. Many of them came back broken. The people who should be dishonored are the ones who sent them. But those people are never dishonored. Because to dishonor them would require acknowledging what the war actually was, and that would require acknowledging what the country actually is. The soldiers are heroes. The architects are statesmen. The dead in other countries are a number, if mentioned at all. The system holds.
