Friends- This is a tough note to write, but since a bunch of you have started to suspect something, I’ll cut to the chase: Last week I was diagnosed with metastasized, stage-four pancreatic cancer, and am gonna die. Advanced pancreatic is nasty stuff; it’s a death sentence. But I already had a death sentence before last week too — we all do. I’m blessed with amazing siblings and half-a-dozen buddies that are genuinely brothers. As one of them put it, “Sure, you’re on the clock, but we’re all on the clock.” Death is a wicked thief, and the bastard pursues us all. Still, I’ve got less time than I’d prefer. This is hard for someone wired to work and build, but harder still as a husband and a dad. I can’t begin to describe how great my people are. During the past year, as we’d temporarily stepped back from public life and built new family rhythms, Melissa and I have grown even closer — and that on top of three decades of the best friend a man could ever have. Seven months ago, Corrie was commissioned into the Air Force and she’s off at instrument and multi-engine rounds of flight school. Last week, Alex kicked butt graduating from college a semester early even while teaching gen chem, organic, and physics (she’s a freak). This summer, 14-year-old Breck started learning to drive. (Okay, we’ve been driving off-book for six years — but now we’ve got paper to make it street-legal.) I couldn’t be more grateful to constantly get to bear-hug this motley crew of sinners and saints. There’s not a good time to tell your peeps you’re now marching to the beat of a faster drummer — but the season of advent isn’t the worst. As a Christian, the weeks running up to Christmas are a time to orient our hearts toward the hope of what’s to come. Not an abstract hope in fanciful human goodness; not hope in vague hallmark-sappy spirituality; not a bootstrapped hope in our own strength (what foolishness is the evaporating-muscle I once prided myself in). Nope — often we lazily say “hope” when what we mean is “optimism.” To be clear, optimism is great, and it’s absolutely necessary, but it’s insufficient. It’s not the kinda thing that holds up when you tell your daughters you’re not going to walk them down the aisle. Nor telling your mom and pops they’re gonna bury their son. A well-lived life demands more reality — stiffer stuff. That’s why, during advent, even while still walking in darkness, we shout our hope — often properly with a gravelly voice soldiering through tears. Such is the calling of the pilgrim. Those who know ourselves to need a Physician should dang well look forward to enduring beauty and eventual fulfillment. That is, we hope in a real Deliverer — a rescuing God, born at a real time, in a real place. But the eternal city — with foundations and without cancer — is not yet. Remembering Isaiah’s prophecies of what’s to come doesn’t dull the pain of current sufferings. But it does put it in eternity’s perspective: “When we've been there 10,000 years…We've no less days to sing God's praise.” I’ll have more to say. I’m not going down without a fight. One sub-part of God’s grace is found in the jawdropping advances science has made the past few years in immunotherapy and more. Death and dying aren’t the same — the process of dying is still something to be lived. We’re zealously embracing a lot of gallows humor in our house, and I’ve pledged to do my part to run through the irreverent tape. But for now, as our family faces the reality of treatments, but more importantly as we celebrate Christmas, we wish you peace: “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned….For to us a son is given” (Isaiah 9). انتخابات العراق ٢٠٢٥ قد تكون فرصة جديدة للإيزيديين: نحو تمثيلٍ حقيقي وصوتٍ مستقل على مدى أكثر من عقدين، هيمنت بعض القوى السياسية على المشهد الانتخابي في المناطق الإيزيدية، وتحدث مرشحوها ومن يمثلهم باسم مجتمعنا في بغداد وأربيل. لكن الواقع يروي حكاية مختلفة — حكاية إهمالٍ وخذلانٍ وعجزٍ عن تمثيل تطلعات الإيزيديين والدفاع عن حقوقهم. و النتيجة الحتمية كانت فشل التمثيل العادل. واليوم، ونحن أمام استحقاقٍ انتخابيٍّ جديد، يجد الإيزيديون أنفسهم أمام خيارٍ مصيري: إمّا الاستمرار في دعم من خذلهم طوال عشرين عاماً، أو منح الثقة لتحالفٍ جديدٍ يحمل بارقة أملٍ بأن يكون صوتاً صادقاً لهم، يُعبّر عن إرادتهم الحقيقية ويضع مصلحتهم فوق أيّ حساباتٍ حزبية أو سياسية. قبل الإبادة الجماعية، كانت سنجار تعاني من غيابٍ تام للتنمية والخدمات. طرقها ومدارسها ومرافقها الصحية ظلّت على حالها، بينما شهدت مناطق أخرى في كردستان والعراق تطوراً ملحوظاً في مختلف المجالات. وبرغم نفوذ هذه القوى السياسية وسيطرتها على القرار المحلي، لم تُترجم وعودهم إلى أيّ إنجازٍ ملموسٍ على أرض الواقع. وبعد تحرير سنجار والمناطق الإيزيدية الأخرى من قبضة إرهابيي داعش، انتظر الناس بداية مرحلةٍ جديدة من الإعمار والعدالة من بغداد واربيل، لكن الواقع ظلّ كما هو — خرابٌ ممتد، وبيوتٌ مهدّمة، ونازحون عالقون في المخيمات منذ أكثر من عقد، ومقابر جماعية تروي مأساة لم تنتهِ بعد. ومع أن هذه القوى تمتلك تمثيلاً واسعاً في البرلمان والحكومة، فإن ممثلوهم في البرلمان والحكومة عجزوا عن اتخاذ أي خطوةٍ جادة لإعادة بناء ما دمّره الإرهاب أو لتعويض الضحايا والمنكوبين. وكنا نتوقع منهم جهود اكثر وسعيا حقيقيا، خاصة ان قرار الأيزيديين كان بأيديهم وسنجار، قبل الإبادة وبعدها، بقيت ضحية التجاذبات بين بغداد وأربيل — تُدار كملف سياسي بدل أن تُعامل كقضية إنسانية تستحق الإنصاف والعدالة. بغداد واربيل ، ومعها بعض القوى السياسية والتيارات المسلحة، فشلت هي الأخرى في أداء واجبها تجاه الإيزيديين. ورغم مرور سنوات على التحرير، لم تُنفَّذ أي خطة وطنية شاملة لإعادة إعمار سنجار، ولم تُوفَّر ضمانات أمنية تُمكّن الأهالي من العودة إلى ديارهم بأمان. بل على العكس تحوّلت سنجار إلى ساحة تنافس وصراع نفوذ بين جهات متعددة، كلٌّ يسعى لتثبيت وجوده، بينما بقيت حقوق الإيزيديين ومعاناتهم خارج دائرة الأولويات. وعلى الرغم من أن الدستور يلزم الدولة بحماية مواطنيها وكشف مصير المفقودين، لكن ما يزال آلاف النساء والأطفال الإيزيديين مختفين حتى اليوم دون جهود حقيقية للكشف عن مصيرهم أو إعادتهم. إن غياب الإرادة السياسية في هذا الملف المؤلم هو جرحٌ مفتوح، ورسالة قاسية بأن العدالة ليست متساوية للجميع. بدلاً من أن تكون سنجار مشروعاً وطنياً للعدالة والمصالحة، أصبحت ورقة سياسية للمساومة. المخيمات تحوّلت إلى أداة ضغط، والنزوح إلى ملف تُدار به المصالح، بينما بقي الإنسان الإيزيدي آخر من يُؤخذ في الحسبان. لقد آن الأوان لوضع حدٍّ لهذا الواقع المؤلم. فتحالف القضية الإيزيدية يمثل فرصةً حقيقيةً لتصحيح المسار، وإعادة الاعتبار لصوت الإيزيديين المستقلّ، بعيداً عن وصاية الاحزاب والنفوذ السياسي والعسكري. إنها خطوةٌ نحو تمثيلٍ صادقٍ وعادل، ينطلق من معاناة الناس وحقهم في العيش بكرامةٍ على أرضهم. إن التصويت لتحالف القضية الإيزيدية هو تصويتٌ من أجل الكرامة والعدالة والمساءلة، وتأكيدٌ على أن أصوات الناجين والمظلومين هي التي يجب أن ترسم مستقبل سنجار، لا أصوات من استغلّوا مأساتنا واستثمروا في معاناتنا. لقد حان الوقت لأن يكون للايزيديين ممثلين حقيقيين، يملكون ارادة حرٍّة ومسؤولة. فهذه الانتخابات ليست مجرّد سباقٍ سياسي، بل لحظةٌ لاستعادة الحق في تقرير المصير، وبناء مستقبلٍ أكثر إنصافاً وسلاماً لأبناء سنجار وكل الإيزيديين. لقد حان وقت التمثيل الحقيقي — من الإيزيديين ولأجل الإيزيديين. ومن هنا، نتمنى من الجميع إلى التوجّه بكثافةٍ إلى صناديق الاقتراع، والتصويت لتحالف القضية الإيزيدية رقم (٢٠١)

A year ago, the German parliament made an important decision by officially recognizing the Yazidi genocide at the hands of ISIS in 2014. That decision gave renewed hope to Yazidis across the world, especially the Yazidi diaspora in Germany. Many Yazidis, especially survivors of genocide and sexual violence, hoped that this decision would mean more sympathy and support for the Yazidi community.   However, in the months since this decision was taken, the federal government of Germany and some local governments have refused asylum applications for thousands of Yazidis living in Germany and forcibly deported tens of Yazidis from Germany to Iraq. Some of the families and individuals who were deported have lived in Germany for years and consider it their home.   The federal government's decision to deport refugees and asylum seekers is particularly troubling, especially after the country officially recognized the genocide, murder, and enslavement of Yazidis by ISIS in Iraq in 2014.   I call upon the German government to immediately halt the deportation of Yazidis and to grant asylum to those seeking refuge in the country. The Yazidi community has endured immense suffering, both during the genocide and in the aftermath. Many refugees are also survivors of enslavement and conflict-related sexual violence.   For many years, Germany has been a steadfast friend to our traumatized community, offering shelter and taking judicial action against ISIS terrorists. Deporting Yazidis now, breaking up families, and forcing displaced people back to a country in which they feel unsafe is neither just nor compassionate. It contradicts the stance Germany has taken thus far.

Inspired by the #fifaworldcup, our newly built Sports Centre in #Iraq hosted the final of the #Sinjar Schools Football Championship! 10 local schools took part, and it was incredible to watch the girls show off their skills and teamwork. Could we have a new #Marta in our midst?
