The biggest obstacle to Heat's path to its shooter of choice (unless Mavs wake up one day and shockingly say, 'We would like to take on Niko Jovic's 4 years and $62 M). Question is whether Klay forces issue before camps open.
Dru@dru_star

“The Mavericks, league sources say, continue to explore Klay Thompson's trade market, showing little interest — to this point — in buying out Klay’s remaining season ($17.5M) of a 3-year, $50M deal with Dallas.” @TheSteinLine Via The Stein Line Substack: open.substack.com/pub/marcstein/…

Ira Winderman on Tyler Herro: “Guys, doesn’t Tyler Herro have the kind of face that makes you want to punch him in the face? Doesn’t he just have that kind of look? He’s that kind of guy. He’s the instigator in high school who is always doing the little digs until it becomes too much. But this time, he put it out world wide on social media instead. I don’t what to say he had what was coming to him, but it sorta was. You do something like that, there’s going to be push back.” (Via @1043wqam)

@cptdankkk So buy your equity. It’s like living in an apartment rental building and you keep your home clean and say oh I should get equity. No, you buy equity/ownership you aren’t gifted it.

Jaylen Brown says players should be able to own equity in teams because they help increase the value of NBA franchises “Players should be able to invest alongside ownership groups and business opportunities. I don't understand why that’s ever been a thing. It's like you’re an athlete and they make it seem like they can control how much wealth or growth that you could actually accumulate. I think that's wrong” “I also think that any other major corporation, if you work for Apple, Nike or anywhere, if you're a CEO, if you're someone who has been on a board for a large amount of time, you get equity in a company at some point. You are part of it” “I think athletes should be looked at in the same way. You played for the Celtics for 20 years, you should get a piece of equity because you helped accumulate the growth. That's the part that gets lost in translation. The sweat equity you put in. You get compensated for doing your job, but you don't get compensated for the growth. At major corporations and companies you do, or at least some of the big ones”

Congressman Ro Khanna said he was detained by Israeli settlers for over an hour while visiting the West Bank. Khanna also said members of the Israel Defense Forces spoke with the settlers and moved a car to block the road. Khanna's experience was first reported by The New York Times. A spokesperson for the congressman confirmed the details of the Times' report to CBS News. The Israeli military said they intervened after receiving a report of settlers blocking vehicles near Khirbet Zanuta and "troops dispersed the Israeli civilians and allowed the vehicles to continue on their way." Khanna described his experience in the West Bank and Israel as "the first time that I have really been acutely aware of being brown." "I feel like people have seen me first as brown, second as an American congressman, and third as an American citizen," he said.

Tyler Herro on if he felt appreciated during his time in Miami: “You know what? I think so. If you take away Twitter, I’ve never gotten hate in the city ever. I’ve been in Miami seven years. Every time I go out in public, people ask me for pictures. They’re cool to me. No one’s ever hated on me in the city that I’ve witnessed or been a part of. — Obviously, they’ll talk and do things on Twitter, but that’s Twitter. I feel appreciated by the people that matter.”

Developing: The Los Angeles Clippers-Toronto Raptors trade centered on Kawhi Leonard will not be complete until the NBA investigation into the Clippers is over. Statement from the Clippers to ESPN:   For the past 10 months, our organization has fully cooperated with an NBA investigation, participating in dozens of interviews, providing tens of thousands of documents, and facilitating access to our staff. While the process has been challenging, we have remained committed to transparency.   On June 30, we reached an agreement in principle to trade Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors. We have since been informed that the trade can only be finalized if the Raptors' ownership group assumes the risk of penalties related to Kawhi’s contract that could theoretically result from the ongoing investigation.  The investigation is ongoing, and we expect the trade to be finalized following its conclusion.   At the heart of this investigation are Joe Sanberg and Aspiration. We did not funnel money to Kawhi Leonard through Aspiration. Like many sophisticated investors, financial institutions, and business partners, we were victims of a fraud initiated by Sanberg, who has been convicted and sentenced to 14 years in prison.     We recognize the uncertainty this has created and the impact it has had on our team, our fans, the Raptors organization, their fans, and the players whose futures remain affected while this process continues.   We remain confident that, when the facts are evaluated fairly and thoroughly, the NBA will confirm exactly what we have said from the beginning: We have not done what we are accused of doing.

IF Leonard’s contract is voided (unlikely, but not impossible) my understanding is the trade would be off, Ingram, Dick and draft assets would be returned and Leonard would become a free agent … theoretically free to sign with the Raptors:
Michael Grange@michaelgrange

So, based on some preliminary convos: 1) NBA wants investigation complete before deal closes to avoid unintended consequences (ie small chance Kawhi contract gets voided) 2) Barring THAT the deal will close as agreed. 3) Hope is issue will be resolved by BOG meeting Tuesday:

@TheRyenRussillo I think its valuable in different ways than before. Taking on contracts for other teams with picks attached to them, OR being able to trade for a big contract into your cap space. Def not what it once was however.

Seven years. It’s hard to put into words what this city has meant to me. When Miami drafted a 19-year-old kid out of Kentucky, they believed in me before I’d proven anything. Together, we experienced just about everything this game has to offer. Two trips to the Finals. Deep playoff runs. Becoming an All-Star. The highest highs, the toughest moments, and every lesson in between. Through every challenge, every expectation, every rumor, and every setback, I always believed in one thing: put your head down, go to work, and represent the name on the front of the jersey the right way. Every time I stepped on the floor, my goal was to help bring another championship to Miami. This city gave me more than a basketball career. It gave me a place to grow up. I became a man here. I became a father here. I built lifelong relationships here. Miami became home. To Spo, Pat, Micky, the entire organization, my teammates, the coaches, trainers, equipment staff, arena staff, and everyone who poured into me over the last seven years—thank you. Thank you for believing in me, pushing me, challenging me, and helping shape the player and person I’ve become. And to the fans… Thank you for riding with me. Through every big shot, every playoff run, every injury, every rumor, and every season—you showed me love I’ll never forget. Whether you cheered for me in the arena, wore my jersey, or simply believed in me, I felt it. I’ll always be grateful for that support. As excited as I am for this next chapter back home in Milwaukee, a part of me will always belong to Miami. Miami didn’t just shape my career. It shaped my life. Thank you for everything. — Tyler

The Lakers can take back up to $9.1 million in salaries for a combination of their role players under contract like Deandre Ayton, Jarred Vanderbilt, Jake LaRavia, & Dalton Knecht. This is their best path to getting a wing, but it'll be tougher now without draft picks to trade.
Yossi Gozlan@YossiGozlan

Lakers order of operations: $52+ million in cap space: 🏀Sign and trade for Walker Kessler (~$30.2 million) 🏀Sign Quentin Grimes (~$14 million) 🏀Sign Sandro Mamukelashvili (~$12.1 million) $9.4 million room mid-level: 🏀Sign Collin Sexton $14.1 million under the first apron.

@Alf954 ‘29 is the only tradeable 1st but it comes with heavy conditions so it’s really useless. We dumped 4 2nds in OKC, SA, and BK for Dipo, Dedmon, and Haywood. The only tradeable 2nd rounder also has heavy conditions and prob won’t convey. We have no draft picks to attach 😢

With what @LeBatardShow is saying, it must mean they have a plan for Jovic. If it was ever worth attaching a FRP to a contract, it’s now. I still hate the idea though, but if they’re going for it this year, it’s the move. Would be great if we had some second rounders.

The Bulls will use the remainder of their cap space to sign Norman Powell and Zach Collins. They have the $9.4 million room mid-level exception remaining. The Heat will be unable to structure a sign and trade for Powell unless he gets a third year added.

Miami Heat salary cap situation after signing Tim Hardaway Jr. His $6.5M salary will go into the mid-level exception. They have $8.5M remaining from it but can probably use closer to $7 million due to their first apron hard cap proximity after presumably signing Ryan Conwell.
