Teachers implement edu policy. However, teachers' unions are often excluded from formal policy forums. As part of @AcctResearchCtr's Learning Partnership w/ Education Out Loud, @Tauya01 and I met with unions in Zimbabwe to learn how they influence policy. bit.ly/3NenAY4

Teachers' unions are often among the best organized & representative civil society actors. But they are often not there when education policy reforms are discussed. New brief from @AbrehetGG & @tauya01 looks at their role in education advocacy in Zimbabwe bit.ly/3NenAY4

Citizen monitoring can work in tandem with legislative oversight based on mutually reinforcing agendas. @joyaceron_ph and I discuss the case of Multiply-Ed in the Philippines in this new Accountability Note on how citizens action can boost existing oversight mechanisms.

New Accountability Note! How can civil society network and an official state oversight body interface for a shared agenda of systemic education reform? @joyaceron_ph & @AbrehetGG share a case study from the Philippines bit.ly/4f3yVHm

On this #internationaldayofeducation2025, we celebrate the role of civil society organizations in shaping education policy and share analysis of how that role is changing. Thanks to Education Out Loud, @OxfamDanmark , and the @GPforEducation, our team spent two years learning with and from civil society organizations advocating for the right to education in the global South. 📷 The Role of Civil Society in National Education Policy in the Global South (@AbrehetGG & @nomhossain) sketches the landscape of changing civil society engagement in education policy as civic space in many countries has contracted, and reflects on new actors entering the education policy ecosystem. bit.ly/3S0IAn5 New civil society actors and strategies in education are spotlighted in two briefs and a blog: 📷 Bangladesh's New Generation of Youth-Led Education Civil Society: Prospects for Reinvigorating Education Reform (Naomi Hossain and Rafsanul Hoque) bit.ly/3ONfvdF 📷 Rethinking Reform: The Role of Teachers' Unions in Education Advocacy in Zimbabwe (@AbrehetGG and @Tauya01 ) bit.ly/3NenAY4 📷 Civil Society Advances Education Funding Through Tax Justice and Debt Relief Advocacy (@ihcus7 ) bit.ly/4107IQT Essential insights into national level interactions between civil society and the state in education policy. Excellent piece by @nomhossain and Rafsanul Hoque that interrogates our assumptions on the future of youth-led civil society and advocacy reform in education, looking at innovative solutions to improving education quality in Bangladesh. @GPforEducation

The dramatic student-led movement to restore Bangladesh’s democracy showed the strength of its organized youth. New brief from @nomhossain & Rafsanul Hoque analyzes significance of a new generation of youth-led civil society actors working on education bit.ly/3ONfvdF

Heavy debt burdens in low-income countries divert funds from education. Over 30 GPE partner countries spend half their education budgets on debt repayments. In Nepal, GPE #EducationOutLoud supports tax justice and debt relief advocacy to boost education funding 👇

We worked with @ecozim, and spoke with a diverse group of stakeholders at national level teachers' unions such as @zimta01, @ProgressiveOf, and @ARTUZ_teachers as well as gov officials to capture the perspectives both from and about unions and their advocacy agendas and tactics.

My 1st panel presentation on Thursday is on the presence of populist rhetoric in aid-recipient countries, with @SusannaCampbell, @karstendonnay, and @hjswedlund. We use large language models to determine the conditions under which African leaders use anti-aid populist rhetoric.

Do education policies shape political inequality?🤔 In our article @cps_journal with @Na_Wehl, we argue & find that they do! doi.org/10.1177/001041… Here's why: 1) schools are important socialization environments: people spend much time there during impressionable years 1/5

@SGarritzmann @cps_journal @Na_Wehl Interesting, thank you @SGarritzmann. I am curious on how those initial education policies that either promote or reduce stratification were formed? Especially for secondary edu, as the policy objective of primary edu should not automatically be assumed to apply to secondary edu

Folks often forgot that access to quality education is hard-won and civil society is on the (risky) front line. @nomhossain, @fhevia and I have written a new blog for the @GPforEducation, informed by our work at the @AcctResearchCtr on the Education Out Loud program.
Global Partnership for Education@GPforEducation

Civil society advocates for the right to learn with remarkable, but little-noted success: When a global norm is established, it can be difficult to see the work it took to get there. @AcctResearchCtr looked into the role of civil society in education: g.pe/UoH750S4mJN
