As a life long #SaintsFC fan who grew up hero worshiping Matt Le Tissier, I now have a great deal of empathy towards The Smiths fans who've had to put up with Morrisey... at least they still have Johnny Marr. I've only got Francis Benali left

Its a bad decision but as soon as I saw that statement I knew #saintsfc were done. The legal approach was as bad as the totally unnecessary crime. Sack every single person involved, inc the manager if he knew. The FA should ban them from British football for an extended period.

@Smoggy1604 I am mate. I hope everyone involved is banned from British football for a long time. And if the manager knew. That should include him also.

@AdamAzor Fair enough pal. It genuinely must be hard for Saints fans at present. I’d be raging with the club and management

I honestly don’t know why they didn’t just let Middlesbrough watch #saintsfc train for the 2nd leg of the playoff. That’s literally the fairest equivalent. 😂

Leeds 200k fine #Saintsfc 200m+ fine and -4 points. This is obviously disproportionate. However while it’s a ridiculous decision & should have the penalty reversed by appeal . I don’t see this happening.

🗣️ @GaryLineker on Spygate: "I have to say, I'm not sure the crime warrants this punishment. A giant fine would have probably sufficed." 🗣️ @AlanShearer: "I'm with you, I was expecting a huge fine rather than full expulsion." #SaintsFC [via @RestIsFootball]

@BHirst70361 If the punishment was clearly stated and communicated. Then I agree. My understanding is that is not the case. If I’m wrong, then I would conure with your point.

@AdamAzor Made new rules after Leeds, all clubs told about cheating and the concequences that would follow ,still cheated all clubs in the championship

@AdamAzor £200m fine! Assuming that Southampton win the final? Probably unlikely considering they wouldn't be able to spy this time 👀

@AdamAzor @MarkJLittlewood A fine is hardly sufficient though. If they got promoted, any fine would be paid off with extra PL money, and would basically give the green light for other clubs to do the same… a suspended point deduction is hardly a sporting sanction either.

The #saintsfc punishment doesn’t fit the crime. Hopefully the appeal will be focused on this @MarkJLittlewood said it perfectly. “Its like being sentenced to death if you shoplifted”. It should have been a fine, ban for those involved & suspended points deduction at most. Madness

Legally the Southampton story is fascinating. Bang to rights, but the spying regulation isn't specific on punishments, so their lawyers could try to argue the penalty is arbitrary and disproportionate (effectively, a potential £200m fine.)

It does fit the crime. The potential sanctions for breaking the specific law are laid out in black and white. This is a top end breach with multiple transgressions, no contrition and reluctance to comply quickly with the requests for information while their legal team sort to trivialise the breach. Multiple transgressions has to result in a punishment at top end of potential sanctions. All of this was self inflicted - blaming the EFL is another sign that SFC have failed to grasp the significance of their actions - this was cheating by any analysis

"Spygate's not Watergate." Former FA and Man City chairman David Bernstein criticises the expulsion of Southampton from the Championship play-offs after the team was caught spying on rivals, saying the offence was 'trivial'.

@AdamAzor @MarkJLittlewood What if you continued to shoplift at every single shop at every opportunity and got 3x shoplifter of the month awards in consecutive months though? That's some pretty serious shoplifting, has to be said

Leeds spied - no solid rules in place - small fine and slap on wrist. 1960 - no solid drink driving laws on place - slap on wrist. Southampton spy - break 2 new rules that have been introduced since leeds- harsher punishment given. 1967 - road safety act 1967 introduced - harsher punishments given including jail time.

@FuryFadez Great analogy. So should someone who has found guilty of drink driving be sentenced to death?

@AdamAzor There was no law in place when Leeds did it! There is now a law on place that was broken. Drink driving used to be legal, should we just give people a fine that drink drive now because people used to get away with a slap on the wrist?
