@cj_garrett Another pro who didn't read the rules or any research as to what's gone on. You wait for what all these pro's say when the deatils & potentially other teams come forward, they'll soon change their tune. All of them are currently believing Tonda didn't know & it was only 3 times..

Another pro thinking the punishment is far too much…
Vfynn_🥷🏼 𐙚@Vfynn_

🚨🎙️Thierry Henry on Southampton expelled for spying drama against Middlesbrough: “I have to be honest, this is a difficult one. Spying on another team’s training is wrong. Full stop. It crosses a line, it undermines the trust that should exist between clubs, and I understand why Middlesbrough are furious and why the EFL felt they had to act strongly. Integrity matters in this game. At the same time, I find myself questioning whether expulsion from the play-offs is the right punishment. It feels… heavy. Almost like using a sledgehammer when a precise scalpel was needed. Let’s be clear: this wasn’t match-fixing or doping. It was analysts pushing boundaries for tactical information, something that, sadly, has happened in different forms across the game for years. Marcelo Bielsa did it openly at Derby and Leeds, admitted it, and people called him a genius, not a criminal. Drones, analysts in trees, whatever, in the modern game with data and marginal gains everywhere, clubs push boundaries. Southampton admitted it, yes, and they deserve punishment. A heavy fine, points deduction, maybe even a ban for the staff involved. But kicking the entire club out after they earned their place on the pitch? That punishes players, coaches, and fans who had nothing to do with one or two analysts doing something stupid. What troubles me most is the collateral damage. The players who battled through a tough Championship season after relegation, who went to extra time and scored that late goal to beat Middlesbrough on the pitch, they earned their place in the final through merit. Now that achievement is being erased because of actions taken by a small number of staff members. That feels disproportionate to me. A significant fine, a points deduction for next season, and sanctions against the individuals responsible, those would be strong, meaningful punishments that address the breach without nullifying an entire season’s competitive work. Sport has to balance two things: protecting fairness and recognising that human error and ambition sometimes lead people astray. If every rules breach in high-stakes moments leads to rewriting results, we risk turning the disciplinary process into something more powerful than the football itself. I’ve sat in dressing rooms where we prepared meticulously for opponents. Everyone does. The difference is getting caught. I hope Southampton appeal and that the final decision finds a better equilibrium. Middlesbrough deserve respect, they were wronged but the players of Southampton also deserve not to have their legitimate efforts wiped away. Football is emotional, passionate, and imperfect. The response to this should reflect wisdom as much as outrage. We need clearer rules going forward so incidents like this become rare, but we must be careful not to let one mistake destroy what was built legitimately on the grass.

@paulharper75 Southampton will be the gift that keeps on giving for a good while, no way was it only 3 clubs, loss of earnings claims, unfair dismissal claims, delay & disruption claims, relegation claims, stories sold, lawsuits filed, details disclosed, extent revealed. Maybe some remorse! 🤣

In all honesty, I think the one thing that City, 'boro and Southampton can agree on is that this is one hell of a mess that is not going away soon. We are all arguing with our clubs interests at heart. Obviously. #hcafc #boro #saintsfc

@samstreetwrites Excuses eccuses! You broke 2x rules not that you've even bothered to research, 3.4(Bielsa's one) has no time stipulation so also applies to the 2nd leg, therefore you cheated in both legs and 1st leg twice. 3-0 awarded would make it 4-1 Boro, happy now? FFS enjoy Lawsuitville!

This is true and people are only arguing because Le Tiss said it. Southampton won the second leg fair and square. A proper framework where the punishment was known would've cancelled the game in advance or let Middlesbrough go into it with an awarded 3-0 lead.
Matt Le Tissier ✝️@mattletiss7

When the efl made the rule change after bielsa was caught spying, wouldnt it have been sensible to put alongside that what the punishment would be if the crime was committed. That would’ve saved them a lot of trouble. I think it’s important that the punishment fits the crime btw

@Buntingfootball Let's also be honest they didn't admit to it three times, they couldn't deny it three times..so far. They also stated it was an intern acting alone - blatant lie! They've tried to spin a narrative & hide the truth wherever possible, worse details to come...

Southampton losing their appeal is absolutely the correct decision. Cheating is cheating at the end of the day. Admitting to it three times as well, it’s completely unacceptable. Can’t see Tonda Eckert continue on which is a shame as very clearly a good young coach. Shameful.

@AdamAzor Tbf they didn't have any evidence to contradict it, only the covering up of evidence yet to surface. When the dust has settled ask yourself was it really an intern acting alone? Was it only 3 games? & Did Tonda etc really not know it was against the rules? Don't believe the spin!

Its a bad decision but as soon as I saw that statement I knew #saintsfc were done. The legal approach was as bad as the totally unnecessary crime. Sack every single person involved, inc the manager if he knew. The FA should ban them from British football for an extended period.

@Toothy73 They were agreed upon sanctions for distinct knock out competitons, all the club's, back room staff & more importantly managers would've known them. You're being naive if you think otherwise. Don't believe the Southampton spin!

Not condoning in any way what #Saintsfc are guilty of but this process has just seen people make up punishments as they go along. What would the punishment have been if we’d lost to Boro? What about if spying had been discovered after Oxford? Nobody knows. No clarity, just chaos

If the EFL had any balls whatsoever they would just promote Hull automatically. Putting Boro into the final just create's another headache should they beat Hull, when Hull have been preparing to face us for the last 10 days. £200k for Leeds. £200m for Saints. Farcical.

@scottpompey Tried to respect the game & not field a team of kids (who at worst would've got 0 points) and we got to this the most widely controversial sanctions in history of -3 points, what wasa big fine at the time + had to pay both teams match fees. Would still be in the Prem now without.

@SouthamptonFC Football club will respond with all they things they should've responded with at the beginning but still haven't even now. No remorse whatsoever. I still don't believe they actually think they've done anything wrong. Help the EFL enforce the rule in future? You what? As if! Joke!

@TheNamesBradMFC I think it's to use up appeals and ensure it's over with before more clubs come to light. That will still happen though & they'll be separate enquiries for those down the line I reckon, if not then definitely lawsuits.

It’s so clearly an attempt at damage limitation. Admit to a few cases and hope the investigations are left there Imagine the repercussions if Derby and Wrexham found evidence against Southampton after they beat them? You’d have to imagine further point deductions.
Sky Sports News@SkySportsNews

Southampton have also admitted breaches concerning fixtures against Oxford United in December 2025 and Ipswich Town in April 2026 🚨 They lost 2-1 to Oxford, drew 2-2 with Ipswich.

The fact that Saints were going to spy on Boro again ahead of the second leg makes me believe, if they had not been caught they would’ve planned to spy on Hull/Millwall as well. There is no chance they can be reinstated. #Boro #HCAFC

@ChrisBennett84 Plus 90mins of both games ended as a draw, what gains were they hoping to witness, what would an advantage even look like? Maybe successfully defending 9 Boro corners in the 1st half maybe, just maybe. But as you say irrelevant anyway.

If we lose Tonda Eckert, that will be the worst of the fallout here. We’ve seen how difficult it is to find a great manager after a long line of terrible ones. Keeping him a the priority but I fear potential (and probable) involvement will mean there is more bad news to come.
