Kaputt by Curzio Malaparte (trs. from the Italian by Cesare Foligno.) Afterward by Dan Hofstadter - @nyrbclassics (2005.) 50 or so pages in and Malaparte’s chilling, lyrical, “terrifying report from the abyss,” is mesmerizing in all the best ways. #books

@MichaelSevy These are brilliant books. I am planning to read most of them soon, especially Musil’s The Man Without Qualities (now that I have read some of Mann). I have read The Savage Detectives twice tho. The Tunnel, I wish I could get my hands on a hard copy. Borges I can read for life!

So happy no one is talking about Solenoid anymore. The book is an overhyped product of marketing and has deservedly fallen into oblivion. reddit.com/r/TrueLit/comm…

@realMattKParker I’ve been disappointed by Ènard’s most recent books, especially after reading the magnificent Compass, Zone, & even Street of Thieves. I’m hoping his new one in Sept. returns to full form. ndbooks.com/book/perfectin… In the meantime, I just picked this up. Looking forward to it.

Finished. 🥺🥱🤷‍♂️ An uneven reading experience. Two stories: one I found compelling, both for its narrative force, and for its Antunes-like prose style; the other, written in a more straightforward manner, I found myself struggling to maintain interest in. I’ll try more Énard.

Finished. 🧙‍♀️🔥🖤 This is a novel of witches and witchcraft and it is a novel of love and fear but the novel itself is a spell cast upon you the reader and the spell is deep and dark and it is filled with terrible beauty.

@mainely @TaylorNapolsky I didn’t finish it either. Stopped at the 250 pg mark. I usually love erudite books where I get to look up all kinds of new-to-me historical people, literature, and events. But this was too much of a strange slog. Solenoid was my perfect book. Compass by Énard, too.

Long enough has passed and I feel brave enough to admit Schattenfroh was a massive disappointment just for me personally. Everything hits different.

@Sean_readz Keep up all the great reading, man! #Steinbeck is also a favorite of mine and I’ve been collecting his @PenguinClassics black spines for a while now. I love the covers so much I reached out to the illustrator and he sent me four prints!
