Last day of medical school today! Closed out med school today the same way I hope to spend my career—learning from and contributing to a community passionate about trauma surgery. Honored to spend it at @CWISociety in Atlanta.

The word abracadabra comes from the Hebrew phrase abreq ad hâbra, meaning “hurl your thunderbolt even into death”. I think I found a new way to ask them to turn up the Bovie settings….

@traumamom4 I feel like we’re in a twilight zone. Thousands of children killed like fish in a barrel and people try to justify it. There is NO justification.

We should all be able to agree that the loss of innocent life is unconscionable. We must stop with the narrative that we should choose sides and tolerate the loss of children as collateral. This is not the way of Jesus.

@SeanLangenfeld Sean. Completely agree. And this is in the microcosm of the academic surgical world. Just think about the global effects of the same garbage on entire populations lives when black and white statements like this are propagated.

I'm also not sure why I'm posting this, as Twitter is incapable of nuance, and nobody ever changes their mind once they've decided right and wrong here. There are only two effective strategies here: toe the line, or stay silent whenever you disagree.

Surgery resident calls out grand rounds speaker and ACGME CEO for "hurtful" comments, thanks his chair and resident for support (in a weaponized manner), and demands a response/apology from the ACGME. Reposted 75 times, liked 350 times despite pretty much nobody actually knowing what the guy said (and in what context). Another surgeon who's known the speaker (and his dedication to medical education) for years comes to his defense, gets 13,000 views and a resultant 15 likes. Social media is so gross. We all assume the worst, simplify things into buckets of good and evil, make snap judgments without a shred of research, then attack people without any concern for consequences. There's a huge ripple effect (in an unpredictable manner), sometimes it blows over, sometimes people's lives are ruined, but it's irrelevant to the mob, as our attention span is short and we've already moved on to the next offending incident. Whether or not the GR speaker was truly hurtful, the way we all decide about his worth and then demand a consequence is extremely dangerous.

Heard recently: Trauma surgeons are kinda the MacGyvers of surgeons. Undiffereniated sick surgical patients: Yep. Got this. When others lean back, we lean in.
