The new trailer for the BLACK "Thomas Crown Affair" has me concerned. Michael B. Jordan has openly said he didn't want to simply remake the earlier films: "The first two films were about rich white guys stealing for fun. That doesn't land today. Ours is more personal. The stakes are higher." And that's exactly my concern. The original Thomas Crown wasn't Ethan Hunt. He wasn't Jason Bourne. He wasn't James Bond. He was a brilliant strategist who stole with his BRAIN. Now it looks like BLACK "Thomas Crown" has been turned into BLACK "Mission: Impossible," complete with elaborate action sequences and a story about "recovering artifacts taken from their original cultures." Cringe. And of course, the only white person in it is THE VILLAIN. Here's the thing: The appeal of Thomas Crown was never the action. It was watching an intellectual mastermind outthink everyone else. Change that... ...and you're no longer remaking "The Thomas Crown Affair." You're bastardizing it and just stealing the name.
