You've heard the Temptation story a thousand times. Jesus goes into the wilderness. The devil tests him three times. Jesus quotes the Bible. The devil leaves. That's the version you were given. Here's what it left out. Every answer Jesus gives comes from Deuteronomy 6–8. Not psalms. Not prophets. Three chapters about one thing: Yhwh testing Israel in the wilderness. The same wilderness. The same hunger. The same number – forty. Making bread isn't a sin. There's no commandment against it. So what makes it a test? It only works if someone with authority over Jesus imposed the hunger deliberately. Deuteronomy 8:3 names who that was. Jesus quotes it directly – to the tester's face. The tester claims authority over every kingdom on earth. Jesus doesn't call it a lie. He doesn't dispute it. He doesn't rebuke the tester the way He rebukes demons everywhere else. He quotes Torah. You rebuke an intruder. You answer the legal authority with their own law. Then the Temple. "Don't put Yhwh your God to the test." You can only test someone who is present. If the tester isn't Yhwh, jumping doesn't test Yhwh. It tests nothing. Jesus' own response requires Yhwh to be standing in front of Him. Three tests. Three citations. The Hebrew behind every one names Yhwh personally. Not "the Lord." Not "God." The tetragrammaton. The text isn't ambiguous. Beide Religionen - Juden wie Christen - haben eine messianische Hoffnung. Beide warten auf ihren Messias. Aber sie warten nicht auf denselben. Juden warten auf jemanden, der noch kommen soll (also der noch nie da war). Christen warten auf jemanden, der schon gekommen ist (Jesus) – und der wiederkommen wird/soll. Wer irrt?
