Here’s something that should make you pause.
Someone recently created a completely fake founder persona. No product. No idea. No company. Just a well-written email with the right credentials and the right buzzwords.
He sent it to a few dozen VCs.
Most of them replied. A handful asked to meet.
There was nothing there.
That’s not just a funny experiment. It says something bigger about how we decide who looks credible.
For a long time, certain signals carried weight. A top school, a big-name employer, a clean, confident pitch deck. Those things used to imply effort and ability because they were hard to fake.
Now they’re not.
AI can produce a polished narrative in minutes. It can make you sound sharper, more strategic, and more “venture-backable” than you really are. The surface is easy to manufacture.
So if decisions are still being made on surface signals, what does that tell you?
It tells you the filter is weaker than it looks.
And that cuts both ways.
Yes, it means the system can be gamed. But it also means a lot of the intimidation people feel is inflated. The bar often isn’t genius. It’s all about presentation.
If you actually have skills. If you’ve actually built things. If you’ve done real work.
You’re not behind.
You might just be overestimating the bar.
