@Miss_Snuffy Ps. It's not a rhetorical question. I don't have an opinion on this because I don't know the whole story. Genuinely interested to what other options the staff could have considered that would actually improve their situation.

@Miss_Snuffy If you were a staff member facing "The main reasons for the teachers' strike are planned redundancies, the downgrading of posts, cuts to pay and conditions, and excessive workload caused by restructuring." What would you do?

Teachers striking days before the GCSE and A Level exams.😱 Kids protesting opposite them, demanding to be taught! Poor kids. This is the state of our country. God help us. 😳

Here is my 2p. -Students who need the most support tend not to show up to optional sessions. -The days in the run up to the exams make all the difference. The revision on the day before the exam is the most important. It has to be this way. Any other way would be pointless.

@AdrianBethune @hb_history @anniedor49 Grades (options in life) + happiness and contentment make people very satisfied with life. Not having any options make people feel imprisoned in their lives. Imagine being able to pick from any career you want!

@hb_history If they do this every holiday, there will be kids who never get to meet half their family, never get to understand part of their cultural background, and never get to learn the language many of their elders speak.

@hb_history Those who need the most support tend not to attend. That is the reason for the wording in the letter. If parents don't want their children to attend they would request schools for their child to not do the Saturdays. But the students need to know that they have to attend.

If you teach anyone at all, and you don't know about @helenrey's CogSci book summaries, you are missing out. It's a wonderful resource summarizing the most important books on cognitive science: bit.ly/3Q7dEnG

@DavidDidau @MadeUpTeacher1 Very interesting. What is the knowledge that is needed to practise? Could you point me to any further reading please?

@MadeUpTeacher1 Yes. Very hard if you aren’t taught the knowledge you need to practise

An ECT told me recently that their mentor had said, “writing is just really hard to teach.” It *is* really hard to teach if you don’t know what you’re teaching! But, once you know, it’s significantly easier. Anything you can’t specify is hard to teach.

@adamboxer1 Can you bullet point the exact changes TTA made to do this?

Two years ago, a student from TTA received an offer to study maths at Cambridge. Nobody at the school can remember anyone getting an Oxbridge offer, so it was at least 30 years, and potentially nobody had ever gone to Oxbridge. This year, we've had one offer for natural sciences, one for maths, one for economics and two for history. So so proud of the students and the teachers who supported them - amazing what raising expectations can do!

@Miss_Snuffy Interesting and I agree with your sentiment. I also see that those who can afford extra tuition throughout their lives are the ones who perform better in admission processes, have more cultural capital and better oracy. How do we tackle this, or do we not?

@adamboxer1 I work with teachers who think quizzing kids on information they were taught and supposed to learn is cruel and judgmental.

I'm embarrassed that there are teachers who believe in learning styles. I'm embarrassed that there are schools that display nonsense posters. I'm embarrassed that there are teacher training providers that still communicate unevidenced and harmful ideas and pedagogies. But these problems are ours to own. It's our profession. It's our job and our responsibility to challenge. Mocking, pouring scorn, and patting each other on the back because we are enlightened isn't going to help anybody. We need to write, we need to speak, we need to get out there. It's our profession, it's our responsibility.

@kerryleicester @PhilMellen @adamboxer1 I don't think it's unreasonable to say that a minority of people can have a learning difficulty. I.e. no evidence exists because sample is small. If a student isn't learning effectively, we should question why and try to get them on track. The alternative is ableism?

@PhilMellen @adamboxer1 If it "definitely is" why isn't there evidence? Im happy for students to use overlays & wear tinted glasses but not happy for workload to increase unnecessarily. I have been asked to print on 3 different colours. i can't show work on the main board with 3 different backgrounds.

@adamboxer1 Also, I think teachers struggle to know what they actually do consistently, without actually being observed. They might feel like they do it, and might intend to do it, but it doesn't mean they actually do it.

Maybe this is too spicy a take for a Friday morning, but this data is completely unreflective of what I believe is classroom reality. In the dozens of schools I have visited, there are only TWO where "ask a question, pause, then nominate a respondent" was done consistently. In the dozens of schools I have visited, there is only ONE where teachers insisted on full sentence answers. The idea that 78% of teachers are "checking the understanding of all students during the lesson" beggars belief. Three options: A. My experience is wrong B. Teachers are liars C. Teachers, like all humans, are delusional about their own expertise Shout out to @TeacherTapp as always!
