ICU doctor here. Yes, the per day cost of ICU is high. It includes, high end antibiotics and medications (major), equipments, procedures, sterile paraphernalia, salaries of doctors/ nurses/ housekeeping covering various shifts around the clock, operational costs of the hospital.

Healthcare in India is becoming a money making machine. A friend’s grandmother is in ICU for the last 4 days. Daily medicine cost alone is around 40–50K. He is not allowed inside ICU. He cannot see the treatment. He cannot see which medicines are actually being used. He can only stand outside and keep paying. Medicines go from pharmacy to ICU. Families don’t know what is used, what is not. Maybe some goes back from the back door. But there is no transparency. Only bills. Private hospitals know families won’t argue when their loved one is in ICU. This is not just treatment. For many families, this is financial destruction in the name of healthcare.

@dr_vee95 Mistrust between hospitals & patients widens due to poor awareness & transparency. Medical insurance? Still Unaffordable for millions. The Govt is trying, but here's the simplest truth: Push Generic Medicines & Equipments so that it lowers cost. Healthcare for All can be Real !!!

@dr_vee95 This happened while my father was admitted to the hospital: during the night, when everyone was asleep, the nurse took away the medicines kept at his bedside. I witnessed but was small & could not raise the incident.

They can easily see all the pharmacy stock being kept bedside for patient use, can even cross-check and be rest assured that nothing is being smuggled out the backdoor.
