Shri Manish Kumar Verma, IAS District Magistrate, Prayagraj @DM_PRAYAGRAJ Subject:- Grave Concern and Strong Condemnation of the Misdemeanour towards Jagadguru Shankaracharya Param Pujya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati Maharaj and Assault on His Disciples During Mauni Amavasya at Magh Mela, Prayagraj Sirs, 1. I am writing this open letter with profound anguish and righteous indignation over the deeply disturbing incident that occurred on Mauni Amavasya during the ongoing Magh Mela at the sacred Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj. 2. Jagadguru Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath, Param Pujya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati Maharaj Ji, is one of the four supreme Dharmacharyas of Sanatan Hindu Dharma—the highest spiritual authority in our religion. His Holiness commands precedence over all others, irrespective of their political power, economic status, or administrative position, particularly in the observance and celebration of sacred Hindu festivals such as Kumbh Mela and Magha Mela. This precedence is not a matter of protocol but a timeless tradition rooted in our dharmic heritage, revered for centuries. 3. The primary responsibility of the civil administration and police during such religious congregations is to facilitate the peaceful and dignified participation of all devotees, with special arrangements to ensure the honour, safety, and unobstructed observance by revered saints, sants, sadhus, and His Holiness Shankaracharya Himself. 4. Law & order is not an end in itself but a means to enable the free exercise of fundamental rights guaranteed under Article 25 of the Constitution—the right to profess, practice, and propagate religion—especially during these sacred events. 5. Yet, on this auspicious Mauni Amavasya, instead of extending due respect and facilitating His Holiness's traditional procession and Ganga Snan to lead the Hindus, the Prayagraj administration and Prayagraj police acted in a manner that was not only unbecoming but outrageous. Reports and video evidence clearly show that His Holiness's disciples—elderly saints and young Vedic scholars—were misbehaved with, pushed, roughed up, and assaulted by police personnel. The procession was halted, barricades were cited as justification, and His Holiness was prevented from proceeding to the Sangam, forcing Him to return without performing the sacred ritual. 6. This is an egregious insult to the highest seat of Hindu spiritual authority. Such treatment of His Holiness Shankaracharya and His followers has never occurred even under colonial British rule, and it evokes the darkest memories of fanatical oppression during Islamic eras under rulers like Aurangzeb. 7. Consider this: Do you halt the movements of VIPs, VVIPs, Ministers, Chief Ministers, or the Prime Minister under the pretext of law & order? No—you make elaborate arrangements, divert crowds, and ensure their smooth passage and programs. Yet, when the true VVVIP in a Hindu religious context—Jagadguru Shankaracharya Himself—seeks to participate in and lead a sacred observance, your response is obstruction, force, and humiliation. 8. His Holiness has publicly stated in clear terms that this incident appears to be the result of a deliberate conspiracy, with an evident threat to His life. Such apprehension cannot be dismissed lightly, as they strike at the very heart of religious freedom and the fabric of our nation. 9. I unequivocally condemn this abominable conduct, which humiliates not just an individual but the very essence of Hindu Dharma. The actions and administration and police have caused widespread outrage among Hindus and have tarnished the sanctity of the Magh Mela. 10. I urge you both, in your respective capacities, to: (i) Immediately issue a public apology to Jagadguru Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath param Pujya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati Maharaj Ji and the Hindu community for this grave lapse and misconduct. (ii) Conduct a thorough, impartial inquiry into the incident, including review of all CCTV footage, and take strict disciplinary action against those responsible for the obstruction and assault. (iii) Ensure that henceforth, full protocols of respect and facilitation are extended to Jagadguru Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath param Pujya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati Maharaj Ji and other revered Dharmacharyas during all religious events in Prayagraj. (iv) Provide necessary security and other arrangements to enable His Holiness to perform the pending Ganga Snan with due honour, without further hindrance. 11. Failure to address this matter decisively will only deepen the hurt and reinforce perceptions of bias against Hindu religious traditions. I trust you will act with the urgency and sensitivity this sacred issue demands. With warm regards M. इंदौर शहर के भागीरथपुरा क्षेत्र में हुई घटना बेहद दुखद है। मृतकों को श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित करते हुए उपचाररत प्रभावितों के शीघ्र स्वस्थ होने की कामना करता हूं। मृतकों के परिवारजनों को 2-2 लाख रुपये की सहायता राशि दी जाएगी। मरीजों के इलाज का पूरा खर्च सरकार वहन करेगी। स्थिति पर नजर रखने और प्रभावी कार्रवाई करने के निर्देश अधिकारियों को दिए हैं।
