🇬🇭 The Story of Matthew Ayariga – The Ghanaian Who Chose Death in Libya 💯💔 In February 2015, ISIS released a horrific video of 21 Christian men being beheaded on a Libyan beach. Among them was Ghanaian migrant Matthew Ayariga. Captured in Sirte in late 2014 alongside 20 Egyptian Christians, the men endured over 40 days of captivity, torture, and pressure to renounce their faith. On February 15, dressed in orange jumpsuits, they were marched to the shore. As the others prayed to Jesus, Matthew, who was not originally part of the Egyptian group was offered his freedom if he converted to Islam. Instead, he chose to stand with them, declaring: “Their God is my God.” He died alongside the 20 Egyptians. The massacre shocked the world. Egypt responded with airstrikes on ISIS targets. In 2017, the men’s remains were found in a mass grave and returned to Egypt, where they were buried as martyrs at the Church of the Martyrs. Both Pope Tawadros II and Pope Francis later recognized them as saints. Matthew Ayariga’s courage turned a tragedy into a powerful testimony of faith, unity, and conviction.
