Dec 12, Yerevan hosted the 5th Global Forum Against the Crime of Genocide. We examined gaps in int’l legal frameworks & emerging threats, focusing on the evolution & practice of #MassAtrocity #EarlyWarning mechanisms and their impacts. @AgendaToPrevent

The current situation in the world & dangerous trends of genocidal risks should make us find more effective ways to save lives. The heavy bureaucratic machinery must become more sensitive & flexible, not only to ensure an effective response, but also to demonstrate equal treatment towards all. 3/3

Regrettably, int’l community tends to pay more attention & talk about genocides & other mass atrocities only after they have already happened & become established facts. We witnessed this in our region not only over 110 years ago in case of the Armenian Genocide but also literally last year, when it seemed that the world could clearly see enough risk factors that could lead to irreversible consequences. 2/3

Even today, in various corners of the world, particularly in zones of armed conflict, we are witnessing genocidal acts, manifestations & signals that point to the emergence of new crimes against #humanity. 1/3🧵, 5th Global Forum “Against the Crime of #Genocide

1/2Panel 1 at #YerevanGF2024 delved into development of UN #EarlyWarning mechanisms & examined past #Genocides & #Atrocities that led to establishment of prevention systems, tracing historical evolution of these mechanisms alongside the failures to prevent #MassAtrocities.
