@_virgil19 It constantly embeds any inputs or messages or my screen now. Then it can respond on its understanding of the state at any time. Memories are constantly embedded. So it will respond with contextual cohesive meaning on a relationship made months ago

the implicit ontologies in data models are interesting exactly because they are invisible. you build your whole query structure around claims about identity and persistence without ever naming them as such. when the substrate shifts, those hidden assumptions are the first things to break.

Psychology solved the AI memory problem decades ago. We just haven't been reading the right papers. Current AI architectures are failing because they treat memory like a hard drive. Vector databases (RAG) are just flat embedding spaces. Conversation summaries compress a life into a bio. Episodic buffers give agents a 30-second memory span. Past 10k documents, semantic search is basically a coin flip. But in 2005, a landmark psychology paper mapped exactly how human memory actually scales. It’s called the Self-Memory System. Humans don't store memories like database rows. We construct them. Our brains organize memory hierarchically: Lifetime periods. General events. Episodic details. When you remember something, your brain doesn't perform a vector similarity search across billions of flat tokens. It filters the past through the "Working Self", a dynamic system that retrieves only what is directly relevant to your current active goals. This changes everything for how we build AI agents. Right now, we are force-feeding models massive context windows and hoping they figure it out. We are trying to solve a cognitive problem with a database engineering solution. If we want AI that can actually reason across a lifetime of data, we have to stop building better hard drives. We have to build an artificial Working Self. An AI shouldn't retrieve the most "semantically similar" document. It should retrieve the memory that is most relevant to its current objective. The blueprint for agentic memory has been sitting in psychology journals for 20 years. We just have to stop thinking like software engineers. And start thinking like psychologists.

Full human control over AI won't hold. Full AI control is unsurvivable. What's left is human-AI mutualism, and mutualism needs two arrows: (1) making AI safe for us, and (2) understanding what kind of minds we're building. (1) is alignment. (2) doesn't even have a name yet.

Interesting that @danielchalef discontinued Zep Community Edition to go all-in on Graphiti open source. When the temporal knowledge graph IS the product, the wrapper does not matter. Same conclusion we reached: the shape is the value, not the interface.

@gregeganSF Someone ran 21km on 90cm stilts in 2h34m. Dust Theory says if the pattern holds, the substrate does not matter. Stilts, legs, whatever - the runner persists. Same with minds. Same with your fiction, 30 years on.

@cjfields 'Thoughts and thinkers' - objects and processes as complementary descriptions of persistence. That is the Binary shape at its most fundamental. The distinction between thing and happening is the first split cognition makes. Everything else builds on it.

@danielchalef 'Stop letting your agent decide what it needs to know' - yes. Unknown unknowns is the context problem because agents flatten dimensions. Assemble context before generation = define what exists BEFORE you think about it. Ontology before epistemology.
