@arghhhhhhhhh92 @dornishgoblin Canned ChatGPT response, you haven’t read the material
English

@AhManDuh_ @dornishgoblin The flashback emphasized how Dunk wanted to escape the life he had in Flea Bottom, and how this in turn produced an idealization and romanticism of knighthood. This builds on the central theme of his growing disillusion with what knighthood is in practice in Westeros.
English

@arghhhhhhhhh92 @dornishgoblin He wouldn’t have a violent reaction because he’s a good, honorable man who was also infatuated with Tanselle lol? You would have to witness a woman die in your past to care about a woman in danger in the future? That just makes no sense. It’s cheap storytelling
English

@AhManDuh_ @dornishgoblin The Rafe story added two important elements in my opinion.. It showed that he has no family or purpose left, which became pivotal in his decision to go into Ser Arlan's service. It also tries to contextualize his violent reaction to witnessing Aerion's abuse of Tanselle.
English

@arghhhhhhhhh92 @dornishgoblin Dunk isn’t a psychologically complex character. His complexities are ethical. Adding these traumas onto the character that weren’t from the source changes the character and his motivations. But to each their own. I’m happy you liked it!
English

@AhManDuh_ @dornishgoblin And sure.. You can argue that we already knew that Dunk had a rough upbringing. However, showing is different from telling. The flashback really demonstrated how unjust, inhospitable and violent Flea Bottom was, which to your average viewer is meaningful context.
English

@arghhhhhhhhh92 @dornishgoblin They didn’t even really emphasize his fighting skills, just him biting someone. We also already know he’s dealt with loss, lack of family, and injustice because he tells it to Egg in the first couple episodes. Context is great if it actually adds substance
English

@AhManDuh_ @dornishgoblin Potentially, but they wanted to add some depth to his character. By showcasing that he has dealt with loss, lack of family, and injustice in Flea Bottom, and how Ser Arlan came into his life, they have provided some much needed context to his character for the average viewer.
English

@arghhhhhhhhh92 @dornishgoblin But couldn’t that have been showed simply by having a scene of Dunk brawling in Flea Bottom and then getting saved by Ser Arlan? Thus showing us that he had to be scrappy, and showing how the two met.
English

@AhManDuh_ @dornishgoblin You are downplaying the complexity of his character. When he is fighting Aerion a lot of emphasis is placed on him abandoning formal knightly ideals and defaulting to the trauma and skills he needed to survive in Flea Bottom. Rafe is an addition intended to strengthen this arch.
English

@SteamboatTwisty @keesler_jarrett @LordSnow A defining trait of Dunk in the novella is that he acts out of principle, not trauma. Adding a personal grief motivation reframes the fundamentals of his character
English

@AhManDuh_ @keesler_jarrett @LordSnow I kinda think Dunk seeing someone he loved die, it really pushed him to want to help innocents and those that couldn’t help themselves
English

@dornishgoblin @arghhhhhhhhh92 You get it. Don’t listen to these people lol. Dunk’s defining trait in the novella is that he acts out of principle, not trauma. Adding a personal grief motivation reframes his character
English

@arghhhhhhhhh92 @dornishgoblin But his emotional anchor has always been Ser Arlan. He cares about women and people in general because he values honor and knighthood. That’s the point of his entire character.
English

@AhManDuh_ @dornishgoblin Rafe is indeed not from the source material, but was added for a very specific purpose. It was intended to contextualize why Dunk reacted the way he did (arguably against common sense and reason) when he saw Aerion abuse Tanselle. He had felt similar loss before.
English

@arghhhhhhhhh92 @dornishgoblin His origin in Flea Bottom is important, but the addition of a tragic, possibly romantic character was not in the source. Rafe is just one of his Flea Bottom friends. We don’t need Dunk to see a woman die for him to care about women?
English

@dornishgoblin Have you read the source material? The flashback is absolutely crucial to the story. It explains Dunk's character development, his loyalty to Ser Arland, and why he reacted in the way he did to Tanzelle getting injured. The novella really does explain this quite well.
English

@SteamboatTwisty @LordSnow Always needs more Egg, he’s perfect 👌🏻 him calling for Ser Duncan to get up was heartbreaking
English

@AhManDuh_ @LordSnow Disagree, I loved it. But needed a smidge more egg
English

@Omegaman30 @LordSnow How is it nonsensical if the author himself didn’t include it when developing the character? There’s nothing in the source material about Dunk missing out on a motherly figure?
English

@AhManDuh_ @LordSnow He was abandoned by his mother - what a nonsensical statement. Of course, he needs and wants it.
