🇮🇷 Everyone’s watching oil, but that’s just the surface of a much bigger global problem For almost 3 weeks, Hormuz being shut has trapped nearly 20% of global oil. But it’s also blocking the raw stuff behind everyday life. Aluminum, chemicals, fuel inputs, even helium… all stuck. Now factories are slowing down. Asia’s refineries are struggling, China and India already cutting output. Diesel and jet fuel prices are jumping fast. Plastic makers can’t get materials, so some are just stopping production. Then it hits tech. A major Qatar plant shutting means about 40% of global helium gone. That messes with chip-making, so phones, electronics… all get affected. And the real pressure point? Food. About 1/3 of global fertilizer passes through here. Prices already up 40%. Poor countries are planting less. So yeah, this isn’t just an oil story anymore. 🚨🇮🇷🇺🇸 The IEA agreed to release a record 400 million barrels of crude oil in response to the disruption. 400 million barrels sounds like a lot. It's actually 4 days of global oil consumption. What strategic petroleum reserves actually are is a pressure valve. They exist to bridge a short disruption: a hurricane, a pipeline explosion, a temporary supply shock... while markets stabilize and production adjusts. They were never designed for a sustained war in the world's most oil-dense geography. Use it now and you arrive at the next crisis empty-handed. And the next crisis is already visible. Iran's export capacity (1.5 million barrels a day before this started) is disrupted. Strait of Hormuz traffic is being rerouted, delayed, repriced. Every tanker captain in the Persian Gulf is doing their own risk calculus right now. There's a specific moment in every resource crisis where the emergency measure becomes the emergency. Where the thing you deployed to buy confidence starts destroying it instead. 400 million barrels released in a single announcement. The world just showed its hand. Al Jazeera
