عن تسليع الوعي وتسطيحه في جوهر المنظومة الرأسمالية تكمن مهارةٌ شديدة الخطورة، وهي قدرتها التاريخية على "خلق السلعة" أو Commodification لكل شيء تقريباً. ليس فقط للمواد والخدمات، بل للأفكار والمشاعر والرموز والمعاني. ومع تطوّر أدواتها، لم تعد الرأسمالية تكتفي بتسليع ما يُستهلك من بضائع وخدمات، بل بات تسليع الوعي نفسه في قوالب جاهزة تُنتج مجتمعاً مشغولاً بما يُراد له أن ينشغل به، لا بما يحتاج إليه فعلاً. في حروب الوعي التي تخوضها القوى الرأسمالية على شعوبنا، لا تُدار المعركة عبر القمع المباشر بقدر ما تُدار عبر خلق سلع ذهنية، كالمحتوى الترفيهي، القضايا الهامشية، الجدالات السطحية، الانفعالات اللحظية، و"الترندات" المتلاحقة. الهدف بالنسبة للنظام الرأسمالي هو تشتيت المجتمع عن الأسئلة الكبرى التي تهدد منظومة السيطرة. وهكذا، يصبح الانشغال المستمر بالتفاهة ليس نتيجة عرضية، بل هدفاً مُبرمَجاً. فالرأسمالية تعمل بخبرة تمتد لقرون على تفريغ الوعي من جذوره وإعادة تعبئته بقيم الاستهلاك وإشباع الغرائز والانفعال اللحظوي. إنها تُحوّل الزمن إلى مطاردة لا متناهية للمحتوى العابر، وتحوّل الثقافة إلى ترفيه بلا ذاكرة، وتحوّل القلق الاجتماعي إلى جدالات فارغة كمناقشة المسلّمات، هي أقرب إلى ألعاب إشغال منها إلى ما ينبغي من نقاشات فكرية. وعندما يتورّط المجتمع في هذا النمط من الاستهلاك اللامتناهي يصبح أكثر قابلية للإلهاء، وأقل قدرة على التركيز على ما يهدّد مصيره فعلاً. وهكذا تفقد الجماعة تدريجياً وعيها الجذري، من وعي العدالة، وعي التاريخ، وعي المخاطر الحقيقية، وعي مصالحها العميقة. هكذا ببساطة يتحقّق هدف تخفيض مناعة المجتمع وتسطيح وعيه. يصبح المجتمع حينها أكثر انشغالاً بالقشور، وأكثر غفلة عن جوهر الصراع، وأكثر استعداداً لتقبّل ما يُفرض عليه من دون مساءلة وممانعة. إن أخطر ما تفعله الرأسمالية اليوم ليس أنها تشغل الناس، بل أنها تعرف بماذا تُشغِلهم، وتعرف كيف تُنتِج لهم تفاهاتهم الخاصة، وتعرف كيف تجعلهم يطلبونها بأنفسهم. بهذا المعنى، يصبح نزع الوعي الجذري عملية ناعمة لا يشعر بها أحد، لكنها تهدم ببطء قدرة المجتمع على حماية ذاته وصيانة وعيه.
