The age is almost irrelevant to that specific decision. Just strictly on what we were watching. It is not Cristiano’s fault that his utility has diminished this drastically. He is 41. Decline is not a character flaw. But someone made the decision to put him out there and leave him out there, and that someone has questions to answer. Roberto Martinez needs to decide, who is actually in charge of these selections. Because right now, the answer appears to be sentiment. Portugal came into this tournament with a squad that has genuine depth, real pace, and the kind of technical quality that makes them legitimate contenders. That is what makes the current arrangement so painful to watch. The Cristiano situation is a structural liability being forced into a competitive setup under the cover of legacy.
