You are Master of Amrit! ਅਮਿਤੇਸ੍ਵਰ ਹੈਂ  You are the Highest Master! ਪਰਮੇਸ੍ਵਰ ਹੈਂ  - Jāp Sāhib, verse 179: Guru Gobind Singh, In the Puratān Janamsākhī (16th cen), Guru Nanak was given a bowl to drink, the Formless (nirankār) Divine explained it was the bowl of Name (ਨਾਮੁ ਕਾ ਪਿਆਲਾ). Guru Gobind Singh, in his martial manner, initiated his Khalsa the very same way, Shackle and Mandair write: "Far from being a dramatic departure, Guru Gobind Singh’s administering of amrit to the Khalsa can be interpreted as a reenactment of Guru Nanak’s initial initiation into the  Name at Sultanpur." (Teachings of the Sikh Gurus, by Christopher Shackle & Arvind-pal S. Mandair).  This comes from an additional reading assigned in Module 2 - building off our exploration of what Nām (ਨਾਮ) means in Module 1.

In Panth Parkash, Rattan Singh describes the Khalsa as a community psychologically attuned to war. He describes initiation into the Khalsa via pahul as a form of birth akin to that of a newborn baby. Singhan janam sangh shastaran layo - "the Singhs take birth through weapons."

That the term "Amritdhari" has come to be associated with a priestly group and not a warrior elite attests to the ultimate success of the British crippling of the Khalsa in the 1850s.

The Khalsa Singhs declared that they were the repositories of their faith, That they would not betray their faith even at the cost of their lives. That they were ready to die hundred times, what to talk of one sacrifice, That they would not betray their Sikh faith at any cost.(37) That whatever task they would be assigned by the Guru, They would stick to their duty till the last breath of their lives. This assertion of vows by the Singhs endeared them to the Guru, Who, overwhelmed with their loyalty, addressed them as follows: (38) Praise be to the Khalsa and Praise be to this organisation of Singhs, Who had preserved the true worth of the spirit of Sikhism. Then the Khalsa’s initiated Singhs entreated the Guru, That he should assign them the most arduous task.
