I went to buy some items from my local kirana shops. The total bill was 295 rupees. I gave the shopkeeper 300 rupees in the form of 200+100. Then to my surprise the shop keeper asked “ 5 ka kya du?” “What do i give for 5 rupees?”. I looked at him and said “Sikka do bhaiya” “Give me a coin of 5”. He looked bit hesitant and surprised to my answer as he wasn’t expecting this. But then he gave a 5 rupee coin. Funny how shopkeepers try to give goods instead of the change. Most people accept it in the form of chocolate, biscuits or small toffees so casually that it has almost become a normal thing now. But sometimes it feels strange how actual money is treated like it’s harder to give than products from the shelf. ₹5 may be a small amount, but change is still money at the end of the day. We’ve just become so used to adjusting over tiny amounts that nobody even questions it anymore.
