The Mitanni weren't migrants from the Indus Valley. The majority of Mitanni were Hurrian speakers. Some of the elite were Indo-Aryan (at the very least, Indo-Iranic) speakers, but their genetic makeup was overwhelmingly Levantine and Anatolian/Hurrian with traces of Eurasian Steppe ancestry. They didn't have much IVC or BMAC ancestry. In any case, the Mitanni were a short-lived polity that competed with the Hittites over control of Northern Syria. They were eventually reduced to Hittite vassalage after Suppiluliuma I took advantage of a Mitanni dynastic civil war and invaded, sacked the Mitanni capital at Washukanni and installed a puppet ruler Shattiwaza on the throne. They were one of the four great superpowers of the Late Bronze Age (Egyptians, Hittites, Babylonians/Kassites, and Mitanni), but only for around a century and a half (~1500-1350 BC). I suspect that the Indo-Aryans split off earliest from Sintashta-Andronovo sphere, moving Southwest and Southeast. They were followed by Nuristani speakers who moved South. The proto-Iranic groups remained in Northern Central Asia the longest. This is likely why Indo-Aryans don't have much BMAC ancestry and also why Nuristani is closer to Indo-Aryan in many respects than Iranic.

🧵 Indusians 🇵🇰 (Pakistanis) founded the Mitanni Empire (1600-1260 BCE) which ruled modern day Syria and parts of Turkey and Iraq. It was founded by aristocrats from the Sapta Sindhu region (modern day Pakistan and Eastern Afghanistan)

Rakhigarhi Update The large scale ancient DNA extraction and library preparation is now underway. It’s exciting to see that the first DNA libraries are looking very promising. We are optimistic about the next steps and will continue to share updates as the project progresses.

PCA plot of samples from Gandhara grave culture(GGC) compared to modern caste/tribes from South Asia. Samples from GGC show a great range of diversity, samples from the sites in Aligrama and Katelai of Gandhara grave culture cluster with South indian mid and Upper caste(Nair,Ezhava,Iyer Brahmin) as well as muslims while forming a large cluster with UC from gangetic region, gujjars from rajasthan and major punjabi biradris and some clustering with KPK pashtuns as well. The samples from Barikot largely cluster with Pashtuns but with one Pakjabi jat and few arain as well. The large majority of samples cluster with people from NW pashtuns in the west to Kanyakubja brahmin in the east and Brahmin iyer in the south.

Seen in Kirtinagar (Uttarakhand) today: Rohini (रवीणी in Garwhali / रोहिणी) or Mallotus philippensis or Kunkuma tree. Its berries are covered in a dark red powder. It yields a red dye. This valley is also full of mango trees which are blooming now.
