Negative/Weak Atheism was invented in 1972 by Philosopher Anthony Flew who defined it as "an absence of belief in deities". The Purpose of this invention was to "shift the burden of proof in debates about God". Neither Philosophy or Psychology use it as a scholarly definition.

Oh reminder for myself for later. Naturalism ≠ Atheism. That is both Philosophically & Psychologically true. Just because "mystical" followings work alongside modern quantum physics naturally via complementarity... Does not force naturalism & nontheism into "Weak Atheism"

The moment you engage in any form of God based debate & negate, affirm or remain neutral to a proposition....Youve abandoned the "weak Atheist" position & shifted to simple Theism, Atheism & Agnosticism. "I just lack belief" becomes avoidance & deflection(Unless Agnostic)

Or in super simple terms. You arent born Atheist. Weak Atheism takes cultural scaffolding & cognitive effort.. It is not a natural mental state. Its a legitimate definition only in that lots of people use it as an identity. It is not freedom from a burden of proof or reason👍🏾

To simplify... it means humans are born as natural animists. Babies are not born believers or Atheists. Philosophy recognises Atheism as a negation of the existence of Gods. Not a passive mental state. Psychology & Cognitive Neuroscience doesnt view Atheism as passive🤷🏽‍♂️

@Ernest1588761 For the same reason Dr Jekyll created Mr Hyde in the original story. Spoiler... they arent actually seperate personalities or entities.... Hyde is the mask Jekyll wears so that his reputation won't be ruined when he does what he enjoys.
