I was sacked today for refusing to lead the opening prayer. I started the job just yesterday. As the new staff member, I was immediately asked to lead the opening prayer. I politely declined, explaining that I had deconstructed from Christianity and no longer believe in it. The room went silent thus everyone just stared at me in shock. When I got to work this morning, they told me to check my email. That’s when I saw the termination notice. I’m genuinely confused and disappointed. Is this Christ-like behaviour? Even if I had been considering returning to Christianity, do they really think this kind of reaction would encourage anyone to come back? It’s honestly crazy. I have the degree, the skills, and the experience yet the only “offence” was not leading a prayer. I’m completely fed up.
