Morning rant (again): Blake Butera made all the right moves on Saturday and used his best 2 relievers (Ribalta/Beeter) and they didn't get it done. No issues with the defense, no issues with positioning, just meatballs served up for 3 costly homers. All of the hard work of PJ Poulin, Miles Mikolas, and Cosgrove was erased in that 8th inning. Those pitchers put up zeroes over 7.0 combined innings. All 3 homers the Yankees hit were on fastballs. 2 were pitches near the middle. At some point, it's on the players to execute, and the GM to get the manager those players who can execute. Coaches can't be expected to work miracles. Good teams closeout games. The Nats have 27 blown saves in 54 save opportunities. That's a pathetic 50% rate. That won't cut it. The bullpen minor league pipeline of arms that Paul Toboni inherited was horrific. But Toboni should have known that and built a better bullpen through free agent acquisitions. His 1 acquisition of note in free agency was Cionel Perez for $1.9 million and he's already gone. Toboni traded away José A. Ferrer and George Soriano. He actually weakened what he had and made some poor waiver claims and a Rule-5 signing. The one early waiver claim that would have worked was George Soriano — and Toboni traded him away for Andre Granillo — another fail. Toboni also traded away his best top prospect starter who was nearest to be promoted (Jake Bennett) and he's already an emerging star and Rookie of the Year candidate for the Boston Red Sox (Toboni’s ex-team). Obviously Toboni has done great things too with the Gore trade and the Curtis Mead trade and the Foster Griffin free agent signing. But he only signed Griffin for 1 year. He will almost certainly be traded now in the next 3 weeks. Toboni also did a great job of coaching up players with the new coaching staff and technology. He also has a great minor league system of position players. How do you turn this around? Do you extend Griffin or just trade him? Do you call up Max Kranick now? Do you convert some minor league pitchers to relievers? Do you try Trevor Williams in the bullpen? Do you activate Jake Irvin in 2 weeks and move Andrew Alvarez back to the bullpen? What about Jarlin Susana? Should they try Luis Perales as a 1 inning reliever? What should Toboni do? What can Toboni do?

@TheCurlyWDude @TalkNats @Nats_Chat These losses are maddening. The bullpen is atrocious. But I don't agree w/ viewing 2026 the same way we viewed bad-bullpen years like 2017 and 2019. Those were win-now teams w/ high payrolls. This is a rebuilding, low-payroll team with o/u win totals in the 60s. Context matters.

@TalkNats But prediction: @AlGaldi will say today on the @Nats_Chat that “if you had known the Nats would be .500 at the start of the season”…..lol. Low expectations don’t win championships.

@wardenalex21 @Nats_Chat No, it's not too early. I've been mentioning Butera as a MOY candidate, and, yes, Griffin is eligible for ROY. Each is a very compelling candidate as of now.
