🚨Sanctioned Russian shadow fleet tanker “Progress” loses control and drifts in the Mediterranean A Russian oil tanker carrying ≈730,000 barrels of Urals crude is drifting off the coast of Algeria after suddenly veering off course. The LR2-class vessel Progress (under EU/UK/US sanctions for violating the oil price cap) was heading east toward the Suez Canal. After passing Algiers, it abruptly changed direction, left shipping lanes. Status switched to “Not under command” — speed dropped to just 1 knot. Bloomberg reports this points to a likely mechanical failure on an aging shadow fleet ship. No confirmed reports of attack or spill — yet.

Despite declaring Port Said as its destination, its current position, course (169°), and proximity to the Libyan coast strongly suggest that the vessel is heading toward Tobruk. Notably, the vessel SPARTA IV is operating just outside Tobruk and has been observed accompanying MYS ZHELANIYA in the area. This coordination is highly significant. The presence of SPARTA IV alongside MYS ZHELANIYA off Tobruk indicates a level of operational cooperation and strongly suggests that Russia is beginning to engage openly with Libya, including the transfer of military-related material by sea.
