My visit to Pascal Bafyau Labour House — reconnecting with the ideals of labour & its vital role in shaping Nigeria’s democracy Earlier today, I had the privilege of visiting the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Joe Ajaero, where we held a thoughtful and engaging discussion on the state of our nation and the critical role of labour in sustaining Nigeria’s democracy. That conversation reaffirmed a conviction I have long held: labour must remain at the very centre of defending our democracy. History speaks clearly. From the struggle for independence to the resistance against military dictatorship, the Nigerian working class has consistently been a decisive force for progress, justice, and national renewal. At this critical moment, we must not allow that proud legacy to weaken. There are growing concerns about the direction of our democracy. When the welfare of citizens, especially workers is neglected, democracy itself begins to lose its meaning. Democracy must deliver. It must improve lives. It must protect the dignity of the people. Labour, therefore, cannot afford to be passive. It must once again rise as a strong moral and political force to ensure that governance remains truly people-centred. For me, this position is also deeply personal. From my days in student unionism in the 1980s, to my involvement with Labour Mirror in 1993, and my role in the National Democratic Labour Party in 1996, I have remained closely connected to the struggles and aspirations of Nigerian workers. I commend Comrade Ajaero and the current NLC leadership for their courage and resilience in defending workers’ rights, even in under pressure. The recognition he continues to receive globally is well deserved. But beyond recognition, this is a time for action. Nigeria stands at a defining moment and as history has shown, when labour stands firm, democracy survives. #NLC #DemocraticRenewal
