I think it is completely reasonable to be worried about the growing electrical demand of AI (I am), but I often see people assuming AI is a much bigger energy user than it actually is right now This is from the International Energy Agency's 2024 report, which gives some context

@Climate_Bros What do yall think we can actually do to use AI sustainably then? I feel like not using AI at all isn't a realistic answer, so how can we as everyday people do?

AI & Cryptocurrency all require data centers. In order to use less power, we need to reduce energy consumption and be more efficient. For example, just cooling the servers requires 30 - 40 % of all the power at a data center. Improved power management systems would help too.

What should we do then? I feel like we cant avoid the integration of AI in our lives given we are entering the era of tech, so what is a sustainable way to actually use it/implement it?

Not only that, but, the computers require so much computing power, which generates so much heat, they use a LOT of water to keep them from overheating. Training ONE AI program for three weeks can require over 250,000 gallons. It's harmful RIGHT NOW, let alone long-term.

@kayla_wolfe realistically we can't just stop using AI, so what would be the best way to prevent negative consequences given its large energy requirements?

I gave a presentation at work about how much resources generative AI uses and now my tech bro coworkers are bringing up every meeting “Don’t use AI, it uses too much energy. You’re waisting water.” And it’s glorious.

@ChloeEm203 Agreed! I think social media has a bad reputation due to its potential for evil, but it can similarly be used as a vehicle for good as well. It is easy to forget that :)

#EM203Robin The first three weeks of classtaught me how social media can be used towards learning and not just a "past-time". It also shows how different people learn/percieve things as some people may benefit from reading a text while others may benefit from watching a video

@EM203Anson I think it fosters a sense of community. The idea of viewing different perspectives, especially those from different uni majors, does really get the mind thinking
