Recently been doing alot of research and analysis on the topic of energy consumption when it comes to AI. I made the infographic below on Canva, and I thought it might be cool to share it with everyone! #AI #energy #consumption #Sustainability

For the problem of AI using an excess amount of energy, Microsoft plans to combat it by creating nuclear plants to fuel future energy demands!

AI’s rapid growth is driving a surge in energy demand, projected to reach 9% of U.S. electricity use by 2030. This strain threatens power grids, decarbonization goals, and environmental sustainability. #EM203Robin #EM203Problem

@OtayMark Would you say that in the long term AI's energy consumption will become more efficient, and so we should not demonize the technology right now given it is still in its infant stage?

How Much Water Does AI Use? Too Much AI’s water footprint is equal to its thirst for energy as data centers demand 24/7 water-based cooling to cope with its exponential demand. A single 100-word response from ChatGPT uses approximately half a liter of water. AI’s water usage could hit up to 6.6 billion m³ by 2027 — which is about half as much water as the UK uses in a year. Real-world solutions include relocating AI data centers to wetter, cooler regions and AI-optimized water-cooling systems R&D. tinyurl.com/3d9k9buu by @justfeds via @techopedia

@DanielleLangWa how can we as ordinary people help to combat this trend? Do you think awareness is the core thing?

@sturgishigh But do you think there's the opportunity for the positive utility of these AIs to justify the energy consumption that they require?

I think it is completely reasonable to be worried about the growing electrical demand of AI (I am), but I often see people assuming AI is a much bigger energy user than it actually is right now This is from the International Energy Agency's 2024 report, which gives some context

@Climate_Bros What do yall think we can actually do to use AI sustainably then? I feel like not using AI at all isn't a realistic answer, so how can we as everyday people do?

AI & Cryptocurrency all require data centers. In order to use less power, we need to reduce energy consumption and be more efficient. For example, just cooling the servers requires 30 - 40 % of all the power at a data center. Improved power management systems would help too.

What should we do then? I feel like we cant avoid the integration of AI in our lives given we are entering the era of tech, so what is a sustainable way to actually use it/implement it?

Not only that, but, the computers require so much computing power, which generates so much heat, they use a LOT of water to keep them from overheating. Training ONE AI program for three weeks can require over 250,000 gallons. It's harmful RIGHT NOW, let alone long-term.

I was in a workshop a few weeks ago and they talked about how harmful Chat GPT will be longterm. One search uses as much electricity as leaving the lights on for like 20 minutes. I never even thought about that.

@kayla_wolfe realistically we can't just stop using AI, so what would be the best way to prevent negative consequences given its large energy requirements?

I gave a presentation at work about how much resources generative AI uses and now my tech bro coworkers are bringing up every meeting “Don’t use AI, it uses too much energy. You’re waisting water.” And it’s glorious.

The explosive growth of AI is powering innovation but at what cost? The unsustainable energy and water consumption of AI data centers is a growing environmental concern, with global energy consumption from data centers projected to double by 2030. #EM203Robin #EM203Problem

@ChloeEm203 Agreed! I think social media has a bad reputation due to its potential for evil, but it can similarly be used as a vehicle for good as well. It is easy to forget that :)

#EM203Robin The first three weeks of classtaught me how social media can be used towards learning and not just a "past-time". It also shows how different people learn/percieve things as some people may benefit from reading a text while others may benefit from watching a video
