How does a vote for VP Harris honor my family? My mother and father were born into Jim Crow. My mother’s father had to flee his hometown because of death threats because he swam in the whites only pool. My father’s father worked on the naval base for our country but couldn’t even use the same bathroom that Nazi POWs had the privilege of using. My ancestors went from cargo to chattel to freedmen and my kids inherit that legacy. I respect my fellow Americans right to vote for the candidate of their choosing. I respect Kamala Harris’s ethnic background and her family’s immigration story. But the “she’s black so we must vote for her” narrative has to stop. She ain’t that. And that’s perfectly ok.
