Always like teaching students "nothing is obvious". Supply and demand? Smith, Marx, Ricardo, Hume didn't get it. Gravity? "Objects want to remain at rest" can't be true. Aristotle's "If not true then false", but in quantum world, wrong. Trick is finding what's ex-post "obvious".

@alexolegimas The political process also has an incentive to exploit behavioral biases … not that anybody argued to the contrary … but I thought this would a good occasion to plug a paper of mine with Leeat Yariv and Alessandro Lizzeri 😂 aeaweb.org/articles?id=10…

I agree that when a a behavioral bias can be solved using a profit maximizing solution then the market is a good tool. But firms often have the incentive to exploit the bias not to fix it. Then this argument goes in the opposite direction. The more people there are with the bias the more incentive there is to exploit it.
Matthew E. Kahn@mattkahn1966

I do believe that behavioral economics experiments identify subgroups of the population who exhibit this or that "behavioral bias" but the costs they suffer from this bias shrink sharply if there are enough of them to trigger a supply side response. Demand creates supply!

If the assumptions are too restrictive, relax them. If you cannot relax them bc the model becomes too difficult - by dropping the model you just think you understand but you do not - what you are doing is you are relaxing the logical consistency requirement so that you can reach conclusions which you do not know follow from assumptions. Honestly, this post is an example of this, the argument is in effect logically faulty. It assumes the existence of a superior level of understanding as a self-evident fact without the need of any justification. In fact it assumes that this level of understanding is reachable just by loosening the logical constraints. But then by construction this is a lower level of understanding.
Jostein Hauge@haugejostein

My main issue with the way economics is taught today is the obsession with understanding all aspects of the economy through mathematical models. The result is that we're training economists who can build models but don’t properly understand the economy. It’s also isolating economics from other social sciences. Don’t get me wrong — maths is very useful, but not when it comes at the expense of understanding the real economy. And, of course, it doesn't help that many of the models being taught are grounded in assumptions that aren't empirically verified. I did a bachelor’s degree in (mainstream) economics. I learned a lot of statistics, econometrics, linear algebra, and calculus. It has served me well in many ways, but the degree was quite detached from what's happening in the real world. It should be perfectly possible to teach maths alongside non-quantitative approaches to economics and adjacent social sciences. Check out my newsletter if you want to read more about this (link in replies).

I'm excited to share my new working paper (now on SSRN) This study investigates the critical but under-examined role of producer judgment in shaping the behavior of AI. I argue that the tradeoff between "harmlessness" and "accuracy" is not a technical bug, but a managerial choice

Kahneman’s 2017 comments on AI are far smarter and worthwhile than 99% of the comments on AI you are going to read today.
Kevin A. Bryan@Afinetheorem

@professor_ajay at NBER AI points out an amazing short comment by Danny Kahneman back at our 1st Econ of AI conference in 2017. Main point: AI has less noise than humans. Most discussion is about bias, but take that noise comment seriously...it's very deep.

Great asset from @AmirSariri @wytham88 @avicgoldfarb & CDL for studying entrepreneurship! I put together an early version of this dataset in 2016; now it's super clean data from a whole team on high-growth startups incl. qualitative goals/activity in panel form. So good!
