This is the really important stuff that most of the hype and pessimism around DL tends to criminally undervalue: domain experts taking off-the-shelf (-ish) DL components and engineering them into a system that has the potential to do something Cool and Good™️

One obvious answer would be that these problems will be resolved with more innovation. But after a decade of most of the world's top ML talent working almost exclusively on this, at what point do we start to wonder if these problems come from the fundamental incentive structure?

Serious question for ML friends: at this point, is there an argument against requiring robust public disclosure of data and optimization objectives used in building content recommendation algorithms, especially if the people building them are going to make claims like this?
