After a 3-year long wait, my latest book is LIVE! amazon.com/dp/B0F4RGQXSJ?… Folks, "Preservation's Cost" has everything you crave in old-school fantasy. It's got dragons, giants, manticores and tarrasques, undead, scheming nobles, unethical sorcerers, angry druids, dwarven kingdoms, ancient ruins, haunted necropolii, powerful artifacts, and much, much more!

Tonight's sword & sorcery film is "Dragonslayer" (1981). Ngl, I'm going into this one a little hesitantly. I saw this in the theaters when I was a kid, and though I was the target demographic, there was something about it I just didn't like. It never has resonated with me much. That said, I have the dvd (and even the novelization), so I'll give it a watch. I already know it's more dark fantasy than S&S, but I'm not going to quibble. We're getting into the early 80s, and there's going to be a whole lot more coming our way soon. Again, I'll post my thoughts in the comments.

@KarnesMellagio The fantasy i write is overtly influenced by, and grounded in DnD - 1st Ed. ADnD, to be precise. People can enjoy it or dismiss it as they choose.

@bizlet7 Even if they don't enjoy it per se, they find it a heck of a lot easier and less time-consuming than the alternatives.

This is why I think 'women do sex work out of economic despair' is all subterfuge. A lot of them do it because they enjoy it. Yes the money is a big incentive but it's like their version of basketball. It's a fun activity. I doubt Shannon Elizabeth was in financial destitution. She loved the attention of her youth and divorced her husband to go back to it.

@TheBillAllan It's a classic because you can easily imagine what could have happened immediately before AND AFTER the image. This creates the impression of a little story, a vignette, and that is why it resonates and sticks with you.

The white desire for 'fantasy' (D&D, LOTR, Conan) is in fact a mytho-religious impulse that is not catered to with 'forgiveness-monkey' modern Christianity. Our deep-seated religous impulse longs for inspiring Homeric archetypes of 'heroes battling monsters'

@kenzietuff I grew up in the 70's and 80's watching "The Ten Commandments", "The Wizard of Oz", "King Kong", "Casablanca", and "Gone With the Wind", and loved them all. Plus, they are valued touchstones of an increasingly endangered shared culture.

“When you were 10, did you like films that were made 30 years ago?” I grew up on Western genre films and traveling to classic car shows listening to the Beach Boys, etc. Some things are indeed timeless. If children automatically think “old thing bad” they were poorly raised.
Stella@ubiquitousnewt

Your kids are unlikely to appreciate Lord of the Rings. The first film came out 25 years ago. Say you try to get them to watch it when they are 10, 5 years from now. Then it will be 30 years ago. When you were 10 years old, did you like films that were made 30 years ago?
