Very grateful for the opportunity to contribute to a special section of @MiddleWestRev discussing all things rural politics and reviewing "White Rural Rage.” (And now that I have my copy, I’m excited to dive into the other thoughtful reviews by many scholars I’ve long admired!)

Can building patient-clinician relationships be the driving factor that addresses some of the critical challenges of rural health care? Our study led by @aleelockman provides meaningful insights into this question…

New paper out in @socscimed Qual Research in Health! We explore how providers gain and use information about their rural patients to make cancer screening & care decisions. The main takeaway ➡️ Trust matters for the patient-provider relationship, and it’s a two-way street.

Ultimately, providers believe trust matters -- and most are highly motivated to take steps to facilitate trust-building with their rural patients. Our hope is that this work can help inform future interventions to improve patient-provider relationships & care in rural areas.

Providers also emphasized challenges associated with shared decision-making in rural settings, and acknowledge the risk of "assuming shared goals" between themselves and their rural patients.

Providers' beliefs and assumptions about their rural patients -- as well as how much trust providers place in their patients to share accurate info & follow through with advice -- can affect the type of cancer prevention and screenings providers recommend.

We first looked at what providers believe about their rural patients. Providers emphasized the transportation limitations and financial constraints affecting rural health care, but also perceived differences in rural patients' values and priorities surrounding their care.

We find that providers believe trust influences rural patients’ communication w/ providers & their adherence to care recommendations… … BUT we also find that providers’ own trust in their rural patients (or lack of trust) influences care interactions and recommendations.

How many times must it be said? The condescension against rural folks does not help! In fact, it actively works against whatever these authors wish to accomplish.

In summary: read Krissy's commentary (especially if you've read 'White Rural Rage') and take time to actually talk *with* rural Americans before talking *at* or *about* them (much like I'd idealistically hope we can do more of in general with all groups of people). -rant over -

For anyone who has sat through any of my talks in the last 2 years (I'm so sorry), you'll know this is a constant source of frustration for me. It's not just rural Americans who are angry about our political system: it's most Americans, from just about every geography & identity

As always, @klunztrujillo is spot on in this commentary. Two of her comments (that also sum up my own views) to especially note: (1) "Rural Americans' identity is much more about positive emotions they feel toward rural areas and much less about negative emotions toward others."
