I have been struggling to articulate the complex emotions I've been feeling since Saturday morning as a Jew, a liberal/progressive, a believer that Palestinians and Jews have a right to a homeland, to safety and dignity. A thread 1/

@psychgeist52 I think not necessarily? For example in Fairbairn’s “moral defense” you were referring to earlier. I think sometimes experiencing guilt or shame protects us from anger and grief - the painful return of bad objects. So it’d be secondary

@AlessandroTalia Oh, I see, yes. That's really interesting. I wasn't thinking of it in terms of that distinction. Isn't internalising/externalising two options, often both, of what to do with shame? hmm

1/2 On the topic of the kind of 'self-blame' that often results from trauma, Ronald Fairbairn says: “It is better to be a sinner in a world ruled by God than to live in a world ruled by the Devil.”

@psychgeist52 I rather wanted to propose an externalising, but still neurotic version of Fairbairn’s dictum (which captures so well internalising psychology). My formulation is not as beautiful. But for many experiencing guilt is as difficult as it is for some to experience rage and despair.

RIP Mary Main 1943-2023 Strange how you can feel grief over losing someone u never met. Main changed my life as only good friends can. I hope that her unwavering attention - "the natural prayer of the soul” - to the tiny little details of human behavior will be with us forever.

I wonder if my professional life has been wasted because I've never invented an acronym for my very own therapy brand. Seems all you need is a little charisma, a study or two, and a shameless Messianic streak.*
