I suggested to Rupert that rather than donate his salary to charity he use it to hire two experienced staffers. Rupert said he wouldn’t and his supporters understandably appreciate him keep his word. But I’m afraid I do think this is a touch naive. Restore Britain probably has a few million in the bank at most and that will be eaten up by the cost of a London HQ, their existing staff, IT systems, campaigns, etc very quickly. A major political party will burn through that kind of money each quarter. And remember when the other big political parties raise money they only having to fundraise for steady state rather than face all the upfront costs that Restore will have to invest in. Money is going to be hard to come by especially if you’re running as a party that’s going to upend the system and especially with such a small team. For instance, Restore doesn’t even have a head of fundraising or a Chairman at the moment to lead on getting big money through the door. Fundraising will also be made much easier once the beginnings of a team is already built out. Restore currently has one full time policy analyst, no full time comms/strategy chief, no full time head of vetting, etc. It will actually be much easier to fundraise once Restore gets some experienced hires into their HQ and the policy output begins to ramp up. So whilst it’s a nice concept of donating his paycheque to charity I’m afraid it’s coming at quite a hefty opportunity cost. We have to be ruthless in our pursuit of power and kissing goodbye to c.£350,000 between now and the next GE is a big lost opportunity. It is not lost on me that Rupert made a promise to his constituents that he wants to keep which is why I proposed he put it to a vote among his constituents as he did when he was deciding how to vote on assisted dying. The circumstances of today are completely different to July 2024. Back then Rupert and his supporters thought we could trust Reform. Now we’re trying to upend the entire establishment on a shoestring budget and we can’t watch hundreds of thousands of pounds exit the door like this. We don’t have time for romantic political gestures I’m afraid. You can’t say that winning the next GE is existential whilst watching big money that could be spent on party talent go to local charities.
