Hi all. Some of you may have noticed I’ve been absent this season. My sweet boy, Nola, is very sick. He has a rare auto-immune disorder that is attacking his kidneys, which is unfortunately progressive and fast-moving. He’s supposed to turn 6 in June. It is breaking my heart.

The Mets have a litany of pitching options that would help the Phillies, but Freddy Peralta and AJ Minter would be a one stop shop for them right now. Peralta is the best bang-for-your-buck out there rotation-wise, and honestly, the same goes for Minter from a LHP perspective.

@PhilsTailgate I would imagine the “upside” comes with a tax — but with the numbers being what they are it can’t be that extravagant of a price tag. He is cost effective $ wise, and I think there are a bunch of teams out there that think they can “fix” him. That’ll drive the price imo.

@binderct Thank you! Hard to say for certain, but the general rule of thumb is that you don't pick a player if you don't have some semblance of their asking price.

@AlexCarrMLB Great write up. Phillies took a lot of college guys after the first pick, college guys should all sign right? Any issues signing any of the HS picks?

The Phillies have their first prep arm. They select Patrick Clemmy in the 14th round — a 6’5” LHP committed to pitch at Georgia next year. He’s Perfect Game’s top ranked prospect out of Rhode Island. Obviously a question mark to sign, but seemingly a strong get if he does.

A name that Phillies fans will surely love, the Phillies just took Clemson's Drew Titsworth in the 11th round. The Phillies are clearly targeting good fastballs in this draft, and Titsworth is super projectable. Pairs his fastball with a spinny slider, could try him as a SP.

Cool get for the Phillies in the 7th round with Bo Rhudy. He was really fun to watch at Tennessee. He's a reliever with an outlier fastball. Has undeniable stuff and a good idea where it's going. Could move really quickly if he can add some extra velocity.

The Phillies have drafted TWO 6'6" outfielders with massive raw pop in the first five rounds. I have no idea if they'll be able to develop them... but this is the kind of swing you want to see your team take on Day Two.

Holy cow, another huge upside swing for the Phillies in Round 5 as they select UCLA OF Will Gasparino. Huge tool set here. Gasparino has everything: power, speed, plays a solid CF. There are some concerns surrounding his hit tool, but this is crazy value for the 5th round.

@jnklein1978 Yeah, I understand. I think fans just have to learn that these things are in no way linear. Every player's journey is different!

@AlexCarrMLB That’s fair. I think Miller’s inability to even get on a field, and Painter getting shelled in the minors, had us all extra jumpy 😂

The two things I outlined in my Draft Primer that the Phillies desperately needed injected into their system were power and starting pitching depth. Their first five picks addressed precisely those needs. I'm not sure I'd give them an emphatic A+, but Day One was a decent start.

@jnklein1978 With the advancements made in early player development (kids throwing harder, trying to optimize every part of their game, etc.) injuries are just becoming more common in the amateur landscape. Unless an injury is recurring, it honestly doesn't concern me in the slightest.

@AlexCarrMLB Alex - does the number of injured players they drafted make you nervous? I’m seeing back issues, a Tommy John, etc.

With their fifth and final pick of the day, the Phillies take Jaxon Jelkin from Kentucky. Jelkin was also relatively high up on my big board -- he has a riddled injury history, but has above average stuff across the board and a good idea of where it's going. I like this pick.
