Thank you, @AlexEpstein! Your help during reconciliation was ABSOLUTELY critical to our success! It is amazing news that the US has since tripled its development schedule for dependable fossil fuel generation now that wind and solar subsidies will fully phase out for new projects by 2027.

If you treat intermittent solar and wind as if they were reliable generators, they can appear cheaper than natural gas. If you recognize that intermittent solar and wind are fuel savers for reliable generators, not themselves reliable generators, it becomes clear that trying to power a modern society with them is prohibitively expensive. It would require so much expensive storage and so much overbuilding that the cost would be on the order of 10 to 20x higher than natural gas!

To all who still don't get why renewable energy generation beats oil & gas hands down:

Elon claims that energy abundance can be achieved with only solar plus battery storage. This is just not true, not today and not for the forseeable future. Even just supplying global electricity demand (around 20% of energy) with solar and storage would cost more than world GDP, because the amount of storage required to compensate for solar's intermittency is gargantuan. And some totally critical non-electricity energy has no near-term electric replacements (e.g., aviation, ocean shipping, industrial heat for cement and steelmaking, and more).

Elon Musk: The vast majority of intelligent people still miss this — sustainable abundance for humanity is completely achievable on Earth. “There is a straightforward roadmap to a fully sustainable energy future for our planet. It doesn’t mean wrecking natural habitats. It doesn’t mean embracing austerity, shutting off the lights, or freezing in the dark. In fact, we could sustainably support a civilization far larger than today’s — well beyond 8 billion people. I’m continually surprised that so few recognize this obvious path. Most of the sharpest minds I talk to still don’t see it. They assume a sustainable energy future either doesn’t exist, can’t handle our current population, or demands drastic sacrifices. None of that is accurate.”

The same anti-fossil-fuel politicians who spent the last decade sabotaging our electricity supply are now saying we should sabotage demand through a data center moratorium. How about instead we abandon anti-fossil-fuel policies so supply can meet demand and we can be prosperous?

We’re told we must STOP burning fossil fuels. That would hurt poor people most. “Billions ... will not become wealthy if they don’t have low-cost reliable energy," energy specialist @AlexEpstein points out. “That’s going to require more fossil fuels, not less.”

Dear policymakers considering any kind of oil export ban: do not do this! The last things we need are to 1) disincentivize production and refining 2) disrupt the global oil supply chain even more Instead: figure out how to open the strait, consider using emergency capacity, scrap the Jones Act, etc.
Alex Epstein@AlexEpstein

Want to understand what's going on with rising oil prices and Iran? I gave a full breakdown on @tbpn. The basics: • There is absolutely no substitute for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, whether through rapid victory or through a well-protected convoy. • There are other ways of unlocking oil that can make a difference, most notably tapping spare capacity or emergency reserves. • Collaborating more with Canada and scrapping the Jones Act can also make a difference, and these are things we should be doing anyway. • We should absolutely not ban oil exports (the single worst idea out there), have our government manipulate oil futures, or pretend that Venezuela is any kind of near-term solution. Thanks to @johncoogan and @jordihays for inviting me, you guys are always fun and interesting to talk to.

A modeling study using mortality data from 750 locations in 43 countries estimated that, between 2000 and 2019, an average of 4.59 million deaths per year were attributable to cold temperatures and 489,000 to heat. That's 9.38x more cold deaths than heat deaths! And yet we hear far more about the dangers of global warming than we do about the dangers of global cold. This is because the goal of the "green" movement is not to minimize climate danger but to minimize human impact on Earth. According to this way of thinking, we should be extremely concerned about warming caused by humans, even if it's safe, and minimally concerned about "natural" cold, even if it's deadly. A more balanced approach would evaluate any global climate condition, whether human-caused or non-human-caused, based on its effects on human life.

.@AlexEpstein says not refilling the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve at $50–$60/barrel was “unequivocally a mistake,” and it currently holds 400M barrels when it could have had over 700M. "Biden definitely misused it. They used it to basically have lower gasoline prices during midterm elections, even though, parenthetically, their entire policy goal was to get rid of fossil fuels, which means you want the price to go up so people can't afford it. It was a very cynical move. They did it in a way that degraded the facilities." "You want it for when you need it, and the best possible time to fill it up is when prices are low." "Keep in mind, this is not 100 days of US oil demand. It's just - the maximum output is 4 million barrels a day. That's one fifth of what's flowing through the Strait of Hormuz." "If you think the Strait of Hormuz is going to be closed for five years, let's just get used to being poor."

Google continues to lie about being "renewable"—this time by claiming a new data center will be powered by "wind and batteries." Let's do some honest journalism here: Google's data center in Minnesota will be connected to the local grid, powered largely by fossil fuels and nuclear—even if it pays extra to pretend it doesn't!

"We are absolutely sleeping on Canada as an opportunity. They have way more oil deposits than we do... but [only] a third of the production." @AlexEpstein says that working with Canada could be the key to protecting the US against oil shocks:
