On This Day — May 18, 2001 An 18-year-old Palestinian suicide bomber detonated a 10kg explosive belt packed with nails and ball bearings at a crowded pedestrian crossing outside HaSharon Mall in Netanya, murdering five Israelis — including 3-year-old Liel Sobersky. The blast tore through families at point-blank range. Liel’s mother Margarita and grandmother Anya Lifshitz were also killed (Anya died the next day from her wounds). Dozens more were horrifically maimed: limbs shredded by ball bearings, faces ripped open, bodies perforated with shrapnel. First responders in hazmat suits walked the blood-soaked street, carefully collecting scattered shoes, torn clothing, and human remains. This was not “resistance.” This was the deliberate, targeted murder of Jewish civilians — including small children — in a crowded public place. Palestinian Islamic Jihad proudly claimed responsibility. This wasn’t an isolated horror. It was part of Yasser Arafat’s deliberate strategy after he rejected Ehud Barak’s Camp David offer of a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. Instead of peace, he unleashed the Second Intifada — the deadliest wave of suicide bombings in Israel’s history, deliberately aimed at buses, malls, restaurants, and pizzerias to kill as many innocent Jews as possible. Palestinian terror groups have routinely sent teenagers — and even younger children — as suicide bombers and human shields. The goal has never been a state alongside Israel. It has always been to destroy Israel by drowning it in Jewish blood. Before this massacre, there was no security barrier along the Green Line, and there were only limited, ineffective checkpoints that had first been implemented only months earlier after similar bombings. Palestinian terrorists could (and did) walk or drive into Israel with relative ease. After years of this barbarism, Israel finally built the barrier and dramatically expanded the checkpoint system. Suicide bombings plummeted. The lesson is as brutal as the images on that blood-stained crosswalk: when Palestinian terrorists are given the opportunity to slaughter Jews, they take it — again and again and again. Never Again means refusing to let Jewish children be blown apart by 18-year-olds sent by those who fund, celebrate, and idolize it.
