@MrLeeCain @Conservatives @KemiBadenoch @ConHome For 30 years both Labour and the Conservatives have ignored, lied to and gaslit the public. The sheer disrespect and cynicism of thinking a new leader will make the electorate trust you again is staggering. No self-respecting person could ever vote for either again.

Most people in the @Conservatives are not yet willing to admit this publicly but it is time to face reality - @KemiBadenoch is failing as leader. The party is in a worse position than when she took over and there are no signs of recovery. My piece for @ConHome on why it is time the Tories followed Labour and confronted its own failing leadership. 🔗 conservativehome.com/2026/05/18/lee…

If a Housing Secretary can underpay £40,000 of stamp duty and not get fined by HMRC, then how could HMRC ever fine anyone else? Especially as the underpayment was brought to light by the media, not anyone else.

@murray_mcdonald @BethRigby How many ministers told Starmer to set out a timetable to resign this week, will they go to or does that make him look weak.

@BethRigby Can we call it for what it was - he led a coup - he failed miserably and had to resign or be sacked. This is nothing more than an attempt at face saving. Anything else is just media hype, one delusional cabinet member has gone, now move on - nothing to see here

@darren_m_sage @hzeffman The PM can only govern if they have the confidence of parliament, currently 90 of his own MPs have asked him to leave, add in the opposition parties and he does not command the confidence of parliament.

@PolitlcsUK Prices didn’t rise from day one, it takes a few weeks to filter through. The true impact will be seen in Apr and May. Year on year growth has fallen by 0.1%, expect the economy to shrink next quarter.

The Bank of England has become a political actor. It needs to be made democratically accountable again.
Izabella Kaminska@izakaminska

For example. I sometimes talk about how the BoE broke its financial stability mandate when it failed to adjust its QT policy around Liz Truss’ new government agenda. And also when it failed to preemptively act on LDI when it first found out about the problem the summer of 2022. In theory, the very presence of the financial stability mandate obligated the supposedly independent central bank to step in to neutralise any financial fallout from poor government fiscal decision making. But this is problematic for obvious reasons. Rather than acting independently and allowing markets to discipline a profligate government, the presence of the mandate put the BoE in a position where it was obligated to support the government. The BoE famously defied this compulsion, but in so doing also explicitly failed to deliver on its mandate. Some say this was prudent in its own right. But herein lies the problem. Being able to determine what is or is not prudent transfers an insane amount of power to the central bank. While also making a mockery of the financial stability mandate. Furthermore, the BoE’s regulatory response to the LDI crisis went on to engineer conditions that made it much harder for a similar blow out to occur for future prime ministers. This action is in itself politicising, especially in the context of the political cycle that has followed. The BoE has in effect gone from consciously throwing one prime minister under the bus, to now effectively overprotecting the actions of the current one.

NEW: Statement from Angela Rayner over her tax affairs “I welcome HMRC’s conclusion, which has cleared me of any wrongdoing. “I have been exonerated by HMRC of the accusation that I deliberately sought to avoid tax. “When purchasing a home of my own with a mortgage, I did not own any other property and had no personal financial interest in the court-instructed trust set up to manage my son’s financial award. I was advised by experts that I should pay stamp duty at the standard rate. “I set out to pay the correct amount of tax. I took reasonable care and acted in good faith, based on the expert advice I received, and HMRC has accepted this. “I have always sought to act with integrity, and I believe politicians should be held to high standards - that is why I resigned from government and cooperated fully with HMRC. “I wanted to ensure that I paid every penny that I owed, and have done so. I am relieved that my family can now move on - and that I can get on with my job.” In statement Rayner team says she has paid the stamp duty at the higher rate - HMRC investigation clears Rayner of tax avoidance, with no fine or penalty applied_ - HMRC tax probe has concluded that former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner did not seek to avoid paying the correct stamp duty on the purchase of her property in 2025. - HMRC’s investigation has decided that stamp duty was payable at the higher rate, while concluding that Rayner acted with reasonable care. - Following a very detailed consideration of Angela Rayner’ s conduct, including the advice sought, HMRC have concluded that she had not acted with any impropriety or carelessness and that accordingly no penalty is chargeable.

@BethRigby I don't often watch or comment but you are supposed to be a free thinking journalist who I should be able to rely on. This summary of the interaction is dreadfully biased to Badenoch. Starmer dismissed her and her showboating in a couple of well composed lines. Please do better.

Badenoch excerpt here: "Getting to number ten is not an award for being in a game show. This is not Strictly Come Dancing and despite appearances, it's not traitors either. If you are a housing secretary who can't work out her housing taxes, if you are a health secretary who can only cut waiting lists by deleting names from the waiting list. If you are Gordon Brown's former Chief Secretary to the Treasury, and you think the bond markets are a hoax, I can assure you that being Prime Minister is going to be a lot tougher."
Beth Rigby@BethRigby

Starmer having a bit of a joke about Badenoch's blistering assessment of his predicament. Thanks her for "the usual warm and generous nature of her contribution" "In difficult days her in put is always a ray of sunshine" little moment of levity that makes MPs laugh

The Tories haven't tabled a debate on education for the King's Speech. I wonder why? Maybe they don't want to talk about all the things Labour are doing to give children growing up in our country the best start in life – so here's your reminder. 👇

@antthedj AB can't collect any names if he's not an MP. Unless Labour's NEC extends the deadline for this until the latter half June, and he wins a by-election before then (which there's no guarantee he would win), his prospects are remote. And I cannot see why the NEC would do that.

Evening @IainDale in your opinion, what’s the chances of Wes & Andy both announcing ‘together’ they’re standing against Keir tomorrow? Which would be more likely to hit the 81? WS to allow time for AB to become MP? Or self interest will prevail? AB fails - then stands behind WS.
