Data centers are being blamed for surging electricity bills and grid strain. But decades of regulation, endless permitting delays, and state net-zero mandates are undermining markets, preventing new power plants from being built, and forcing early retirements of reliable power. We can have AI, environmental progress, and affordable energy. We just need the freedom to do it. My @PostOpinions op-ed with @realsampeterson:

We had to zoom in really far to get the US share of the world's shipbuilding to show up on the graph. After 106 years of Jones Act, there's little to show for it.

"Economist José Caraballo Cueto explained that one of the reasons why it was previously impossible [for Puerto Rico] to buy fuel directly from U.S. suppliers was the limitation imposed by the Jones Act."

The larger lesson of the Jones Act waiver is straightforward. It will provide real, if temporary, economic benefits. But it also amounts to an implicit acknowledgment that the Jones Act itself is a supply chain impediment, writes Cato’s @cpgrabow. ow.ly/TAff50Yw66T

Today @realDonaldTrump waived the "Jones Act” because the war increased the price of oil. The Jones Act raises all sorts of prices by giving U.S. shipping companies special treatment. But it shouldn’t be waived for 60 days. Here’s why it should be killed for good.

Asked @claudeai to do the same for Alaska, but incorporate the benefits of repealing *all* US coastwise laws (Jones Act, Passenger Vessel Services Act, etc.). Came up with a long-term annual gain of $1.8 billion, which is about $2,400 per Alaskan.

FWIW, I recently asked @claudeai to calculate the economic gains for Hawaii in the short-, medium-, and long-term of the Jones Act's repeal. It produced a 26-page report that found a long-term benefit, after supply chains have fully adjusted, of $2.3 billion per year:

Talk of a Jones Act waiver amid rising energy and fertilizer costs tied to Middle East conflict underscores a basic problem: the law restricts shipping options and drives up transportation costs in the US, says @cpgrabow. If it must be waived during crises, why keep it at all? ow.ly/laA950YtA5h

The Jones Act is a century-old law that raises costs, hurts the environment, and blocks competition—while failing to deliver on its promises. It’s time to scrap this failed policy, explains Cato's @cpgrabow.

“If the Jones Act must be suspended for national security emergencies, why keep it during peacetime—or at all?” asks @cpgrabow of the Cato Institute as the Trump administration reportedly weighs temporary Jones Act waivers amid Iran war-driven oil price spikes.
