For a place with sunlight all year long, Puerto Rico is a dark paradise. Dubai is quite theatrical, all status and shine. Puerto Rico is the opposite. No amount of money can buy real luxury here. 47% of the island lives on welfare. “Fuck you” money doesn’t work. It buys neither belonging nor meaning. The US gov didn’t put economic growth incentives here for no reason. The brightness just exposes everything you can’t run from. You do not rise to Valhalla here, glory is meaningless. You sink into the quiet/the slow decay of time. The ocean offers no reflection, only visual depth. My apartment specially does not face the water because I already know what it shows: nothing, like Descartes looking at his oven I’ve seen traders lose their minds chasing trades in a chopping market, who trade because there’s nothing else to do. I’ve seen founders spiral because there’s no one left to impress, no one to call them smart. I’ve seen people travel endlessly during their 182 days abroad, trying to outrun boredom, only to end up more alone. Divorces and weird hobbies. I’ve watched builders fade without the communities of NYC or SF, because here there’s no energy to steal, or a movement to hide behind. It’s a place that strips you bare, because there is no validation, no status games, no quick dopamine, no Michelin restaurants, just your own ontology. You face yourself, and there’s nowhere left to go and nothing that can distract. And yet, things still spawn here. Jeff started Hyperliquid here. @goodalexander imagined a world after fiat. These ideas weren’t born from comfort, but from emptiness. Puerto Rico promises freedom, then takes everything superficial away until only what’s real is left. In that emptiness, meaning returns.
