Being a scientist, I had to check the math. Turns out it's even worse. You could have made $53,000 (£44,000) a day or $20 million per year since Jesus was born and still not make the profits Shell did in 2022.

BREAKING - 36,558 total votes were cast in UC Academic Workers’ Strike Authorization Votes, with 98% voting Yes to authorize a multi-unit strike if necessary. These are far and away the largest and most decisive strike authorization votes ever taken by Academic Workers in the US.

@FindlaterGroup @kaymtye @georgevengro For the record, from at least one student's perspective, we also think professors should be getting and keeping (thanks university overhead) more money to adequately pay their trainees. All the more reason for solidarity here.

@kaymtye @georgevengro So I 100% agree about raising student stipends… but in the interest of accuracy, I don’t know what faculty salaries you are looking at, but I think $60-70k is closer to the average start assistant prof salary (not everyone lives on the coasts! :) )

Here’s a hot take that might lose me some friends 🤷🏻♀️ but it seems obv:
Grad students are the lifeblood of academia. We must raise their stipends above the poverty line so they can focus on research instead of survival.
When the union strikes, we (PIs) should strike with them.
